Hybrids is a sci-fi thriller set in the future, where technology has left the people of Britain in fear. A new sickness called Creep is infecting humans, making them merge with technology they are using. The Government have begun to round hybrids up and take them to the Centre for Genetic Rehabilitation, but no one is ever seen again after being taken there. Kestrella and Johnny Online are hybrids; Kestrella with a mobile attached to her hand and Johnny with a computer merged with him. Kestrella tracks Johnny down through the internet so that he can use his computer skills and intelligence to find her missing mother who has recently come down with Creep. But as new laws against the hybrids begin to appear, they two must now focus on not being captured.
The story is written in first person, the narration switching in each new chapter to either Johnny or Kestrella. I thought the changing perspectives were interesting and completely different from each other so that it is a fresh look on events.
It has an original plot which can be easily identified with by people of this generation who seem to have a love affair with technology and electronics. Although I found the romance between Johnny and Kestrella forced, slightly rushed and not believable enough. The characters themselves are realistic though even if they are infused with something electrical. Each character was unique with their own personal opinions and reactions to things which either left me liking or hating them. The book is also thought provoking on whether or not the hybrids should be given equal rights, both sides (Government and the hybrids) put forth their opinions about this.
I enjoyed the storyline and its twists at the end were surprising. But the ending itself was disappointing and frustrating; the story lifted me up in anticipation about what would happen next and then abruptly ended, leaving the book open for a sequel. Hybrids was the winner for the HarperCollins nationwide/Saga Magazine competition, but to my knowledge there has been no release of a sequel, so fans may need to wait for a little while longer.
But I enjoyed reading this book and found myself gripped to the very end. People who like reading sci-fi future fictions will find this a good buy, it may be a children's book but its plot is interesting and unique. I'd read this again, but only when the next book is written, I don't want to be disappointed at the ending yet again without the next book to turn to. I may have found the romance a little fake and forced but I’d ignore that just for the rest of the story. I’d definitely recommend this to my sci-fi fan friends.
