Some of you may have caught an interview with Marie Mongan on Richard and Judy a few weeks ago. She was talking about the technique she invented to improve the birthing process for her daughter and first grandchild
When Marie’s daughter had her first baby, Marie called upon her own experiences of having 4 gentle and natural childbirths of her own back in the 50s & 60s. For her births Marie had used the theories published in 1933 in the book ‘Childbirth without Fear’ by English Doctor, Grantly Dick-Read. For her daughter & 2 friends she coupled this with her own counselling and hypnotherapy background and developed the HypnoBirthing® programme.
From this beginning the programme sprung to life. HypnoBirthing® spread from the USA to Canada
& Australia, before coming to the UK.
The HypnoBirthing® method of childbirth has already helped many thousands of parents and babies in 22 countries and the numbers are growing daily as either, more parents pass on their experiences to their friends and families, or medical practitioners experience HypnoBirths first-handThe HypnoBirthing® childbirth method is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing.
HypnoBirthing® teaches the mother and her birth companion how to experience birth in a more comfortable manner. Ideally the birth companion is the person who the mother has chosen as her life partner. Where this is not possible or desired then they choose a family member or a friend.
When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth, with her mind and body working together in harmony, nature does what it was designed to do and what it does so effortlessly with all other animals.
The cycle of ‘Fear-Tension-Pain’ is broken as pre-programming is deconstructed, allowing women to trust their bodies and to work with them .
HypnoBirthing® allows parents to take control. Birthing mothers are not asleep or in a trance. They are aware but deeply relaxed
HypnoBirthing® is taught by a qualified practitioner. This can be on a 1-2 basis with the expectant mothers and their birth companion or small classes of 3-4 'couples'. There are usually 5 weekly 2.5 hour classes but this may vary according to the practitioner and the needs of the attendees. Costs vary around the country but average around £200-£250 per couple per course. 'Couples' can start anytime after the first 13 weeks. Weeks 18-30 are the best time as this allows for plenty of time to practice techniques
The classes are informal and involve the couples being taught several hypnosis/relaxation techniques as well as watching videos of some actual births. The downside of the course is that at the moment all the footage is of American births (we English are a bit more reserved)
Mothers-to-be and their birthing partners learn:
How to have an easier, more natural birth
To explode the myth that pain is a necessary accompanyment to labour
Deep relaxation techniques to help eliminate the ‘Fear-Tension-Pain’ syndrome
To release all the negative pre-programming which they may have learnt around birthing
How the female body is naturally designed to conceive, nurture and birth a baby with comfort and ease
How mum and birth companion can create the calm & loving birthing environment they want
Gentle birthing techniques which allow mums to breathe their baby into the world without hard effort
To use individual birthing instincts to birth baby naturally
This programme is not the same as using hypnosis in childbirth. Whilst that can be effective it is only a way of controlling pain. Breaking the 'Fear-Tension-Pain' cycle eliminates much of the pain. Many HypnoBirthing® mums say they genuinely felt little or no discomfort at all during the whole process.
Even if a mother has had a caesarean section in previous births they can still enjoy a hypnobirth this time round. Even those mums who end up needing medical intervention or c-sections at the end of their HypnoBirthing® course still find that the techniques they learnt help with the whole birthing process, the healing rate and with their baby's tranquility and alertness.
This is just a brief overview of an amazing technique for childbirth. For further information go to www.hypnobirthing.com or www.hypnobirthing.co.uk (from there you can find your nearest practioner. As you currently have to email the USA for the info please be aware it can take a couple of days for the results to get to you)

This sounds like a great idea and I have a couple of pregnant friends I might recommend it to. Whether or not it works anything that helps a woman prepare for child birth has got to be a good thing! Cheers Sweary.

Interesting, but as others say I would like to hear more of a personal angle to the whole process. This is primarily because I still remain skeptical that you can have labour without pain - hearing about how it works from someone who has been through it (either directly or the partner) would convince me more.

Have you actually given birth using this method yourself and how was it? that's the bit I am really interested in :) xx E.
