I figured out that I had a “spare” £100 per month to throw around, it would just have been spent on junk anyway and with my dad agreeing to pay the insurance my maximum expenditure was around £4000.

Before dragging my poor old daddy around to actually buy a car, I dragged poor old Drewboy around many a car garage in the rain hail and snow. I know nothing about car’s and would probably be taken for a fool in the car garage!! The Hyundi Accent was always in the back of my mind as my mum had one when I was about 14 and she had loved it. There were certain criteria that my car had to meet. It had to be big enough for me and my daughter and my daughter’s accessories- her pram or buggy, her car seat, toys, changing bag and the other various bits and pieces that she would need to keep her alive should we get stranded for months on end in a freak weather shift (Yes a mother needs to think of these things!!). It also had to be gentle on the eyes as, after all, I may be a mum but I was still only 19, I wanted a nice car. It obviously had to be safe, with airbags as standard and power steering……… the saga begins…..
My Hyundi Accent coupe GSi.
I walked into my first garage, incidentally a Peugeot garage and saw her sitting there. I had already voiced my preferences to my dad and he also came to the conclusion that an accent would be ideal. She has 3 doors and is blue, that’s about as technical as I get I’m afraid. I know that it is a 1.3cc but despite this being quite low, the accent is fairly quick off the mark, in my opinion it has very good acceleration ( that’s maybe just my suberb driving!!) To look at the exterior is fairly impressive. Not on par with the BMW’s or TT’s of this world but a nice looking car non the less. As I said it is blue, it is the newer type of accent as it is a 2001 Y registration (although upon research there is a newer 2005 version which isn’t as nice, it’s a hash of the older style and newer style thrown together, see pic), it has a spoiler, is lower at the front and had rectangle lights unlike the older version and the newer one. It is slightly larger than an escort, which is quite big for a first car. It has three break light with one on the spoiler as well, which I think adds to the look.
The interior, however, is grey and very plastic. It’s not aesthetically pleasing at all and very cheap looking. The dash board is grey, the radio is grey, the gear stick is grey, the steering wheel is grey, the seats are grey, you get the picture. It seems as though it was made in this way to keep the cost down. It had electric windows, the buttons being…..black!! however set in grey. As with all Korean and Japanese exports the controls of the car i.e. the indicators, lights and wide screen wipers are on the opposite side from British, German and basically every other car. This takes a lot of getting used to, many a time I’ve tried to indicate right and turned on the wipers by mistake!! On the contrary the seats are very comfortable and the driver seat has three different things to control the way you sit. It has the bog standard move back and forward and also the lever to adjust the back of the seat. However there is also another wee lever to determine how straight the middle of the back of the seat is, very handy if, like me, your back isn’t what it used to be! From the outside you would never guess but the boot is extremely spacious and at one time I can fit my daughter’s big pram and push chair seat plus her folded down buggy and many a shopping bag! Ideal as a family car. It has manual central locking which can only be operated from the driver side which is a tad annoying!
The drive.
Once you’ve got over the state of the interior, you can get down to driving the thing. You’re in for a pleasant surprise. The power steering makes the steering extremely light but not too light so as you don’t feel in control of the car. The gears in the 5 speed gear box, admittedly, are really far apart and getting it into first is a challenge. This doesn’t take long to master and once you’re used to the spaced out gear changes, it’s a lot of fun to drive. The handling is really good. I’m on the motorway on almost a daily basis and keeping up round corners is no problem for the Accent. 60mph round a bend is a breeze for this car. As mentioned before the acceleration is really good and there is a rev counter so that you know you’re not over doing it. The accent can easily go up to 60 or 70 in 4th gear without feeling like you’re pushing it so it can easily keep up with the pace. The fuel consumption of the car is pretty economical. The tank hold around £25 - £27 and you can get up to 375 miles to the tank. The Accent may not command the road but it certainly holds it’s own.
I’d give this car 4 stars out of 5, dropping one for the cheap interior. I would highly recommend this car as a car for both the family and the boy racer in you.
Advantages: Perky peformance,Reliability, equipment,Running costs Disadvantages: Cheap interior.Mpg could be improved. No diesel in the range
...Reliability....
The Hyundai Accent is voted the most relaible car which can be bought in the UK new according to Which Car? mag.I need a car that is very reliable which this car is but i also need a car that is capable of doing a lot of miles which i am afraid the interior will not be able to cope with.
Recommedations...
I woul stongly recommend this car to a family who also have a bigger car as the Accent will be a tight crush to get 4 people ... ...like a brick.
I may have seconds thoughts about the Hyundai Accent as it is the best car i have come across yet.I may be able to increase my budget on a new car so the top of the range Accent may well be in the picture. ...

Advantages: Cheap, reliable and easy to drive Disadvantages: Steamy windows
...Then we visited the Hyundai garage! Wandering around I actually walked right past the red Hyundai Accent at the back of the forecourt, I was looking through ‘small car’ blinkers and immediately dismissed the Accent as too big. My husband stopped though, and called me back for a look. “This has got power steering,” he said, and as I turned around for a second look I have to admit that I was very taken with the appearance of the Accent. The colour ... ...was drawn back to the Hyundai Accent, and returned on Sunday to take it out for a test drive. It had been two months since I’d passed my test, and during those two months I’d only driven my husbands car twice! Still, I was very surprised when I jumped into the drivers seat of the Accent at just how easy it was to drive, even for a comparative novice like me! The saleswoman took me through the controls, and I was very pleased to notice the adjustable ...

Opinion based on Accent 1.3e (a 1.3i with an "e"), S reg.
The Accent itself is definitely budget sector - although the fit and finish externally often belies that fact.
What is wrong with them ?
The demisting is terrible (and I mean *terrible* to the point of dangerous). In wet weather, when you get into the car damp, you had better keep a chamois leather handy, because the heater / fan cannot cope, and all internal windows will mist to the point ... ...help the airflow to demist because the car is fiendishly designed to pour water all over the occupants with as little as 1/4" opening.
The suspension reminds me of a cart with solid wheels - try going over any speed bumps, and you will soon discover the suspension bottoms out even at 2-3mph. If you really want one of these cars, test drive it over as many bumps as possible ! The rear end also has a tendency to bounce a LOT after coming off a speed ...

The Hyundai plant is only 90 kms away from Istanbul where I live. There, the H1 Starex is built for export to the whole world also several Accent models ranging from the 1.3, 1.5i, 1.5CRDI models. In fact the facelift which made the car look like a shrinked Subaru Impreza was actually done here (far as I know)
I tested the 1.5i and 1.5CRDI models for myself. Here goes :
1- The 1.5i Sedan :

*** Body and Looks : The car looks ... ...remind you of typical Korean and Malaysian cars. (ya know those colorful stripes, "blue turn indicators" et al.) Only, the chrome grille is too jazzy and even ugly for this class of a car. The body is rigid enough but tends to flex under load transfer. So you better always remind yourself of the laws of physics while cornering.
*** Interior :
The interior is well laid out. However, the tacky and hard plastics spoil your view. The car I tested was ...

...me the loan of a Hyundai Accent, it was a 1.3 Lsi Automatic, rather fetching in it's metallic green, and not a bit of rust on it despite 9 years and 99000 miles. I used the car for 4 hours then decided to buy it. I've owned Protons before, and like the Hyundai, they are a cousin of the Mitsubishi Lancer, the Protons had all been stunningly reliable and I was expecting more of the same from the Accent.
So far, I haven't been disappointed, an early ... ...A lot of people criticise Hyundai for a poor interior finish, and yes, it's not up to modern standards, but taken in the context of a budget car, there is nothing wrong with it, there's enough room for 4 large people, and a fifth smaller one squeezed in between, and although there's no sunroof, electric windows or aircon, if it had have been offered on an a 1980's british car, it would have been described as luxurious.
I've had none of the misting ...

Advantages: Cheap, reliable, different, fun to drive Disadvantages: bad image, hard to mod if thats your thing, terrible clutch
The first time i saw my mothers red hyundaiaccent1.3 i was horrified mainly due to the colour and the fact it was a hyundai this was back in the 90's when cars where still round and not square 96 i believe. Hyundai or not i was still going to drive it and when i did oh yeah it was a fun right and the engine at the time was the highest bhp compared to similar engine sizes.
I then decided to buy my own but why have the 1.3 for just a few hundred more green ones i could have the 1.5 mvi ( 98) i bought it yellow for only 2500 with only 28000 on the clock best bargian of my life (to date) i love this car have since driven other cars including a 2 litre 306 a 1.6 and 2 litre corolla corsas clios fiestas and all that tat but none compare to my hyundai.

Advantages: Cheap to buy and insure, reliable. Disadvantages: Very basic and poor handling.
The particluar model I am reviewing is the HyundaiAccent Coupe 1.3i 1998(S) which is the older style with the more rounded look. I personally prefer the look of these to the newer style but that's just a matter of taste.
I bought my HyundaiAccent 6 years ago when it was 3 years old. My father was the previous owner so the car has been in the family since it was new.
To be fair, this has been a very reliable car. It hasn't failed to start once in all it's life (touch wood!) and has only broken down once in 9 years when a heat guard from the engine came loose and fell against the radiator causing the car to overheat. OK the heat guard shouldn't have fallen off but these things happen occasionally and where it fell was more bad luck than anything.
I have found this car very comfortable and spacious considering that it ...
