Advantages: Amazingly cheap for what you get. Disadvantages: Electric window switches in middle of car.
I bought my Hyundai Accent MVi in October 1998. It was the lovely "vivid yellow" colour which drew me to the car - which was extremely different until the Micra, Punto and Megane all came out in yellow! The spoiler on the back with built-in brake-light not only looks excellent, but is a great security feature (now nearly every new car comes with a high level brake light!).
The MVi has excellent brakes (twin disk front brakes) ... ...mine for 11 grand) as Hyundai were just trying to break into the UK market and were throwing incentives out to potential customers - I even got asked if I wanted leather seats in mine for no extra cost!
I have had no reliability problems and even if I had, I received a free 3 year service card and warranty with my sales package so I would not have paid for any servicing anyway.

The MVi has excellent brakes (twin disk front brakes) and corners and handles well on the road, even in the wet. I used to have a Micra SuperS and thought the Micra was superb - the MVi handles just as well and is a bigger car!
The 1.5 engine has more than enough power - I had a 1.3 Micra (SuperS), and a 1.4 Fiesta (Si), and the MVi feels more responsive than these two cars (the only two I can compare against!) and the MVi is bigger.
I think the MVi was such a bargain (I think I got mine for 11 grand) as Hyundai were just trying to break into the UK market and were throwing incentives out to potential customers - I even got asked if I wanted leather seats in mine for no extra cost!

Thank God I have never had a car crash so I cannot give an opinion on the car safety - the car does come with a drivers side airbag.
There is more than enough headroom (I am 5'9" and I have a good 2" spare) - and legroom is spacious in the back (I've been told - I am never in the back!).
The MVi I bought came with two security features - 1) a chip in the keys so the immobiliser would recognize that the key was legitimate, and 2) etched windows to deter car theives. I thought an alarm would have been nice as I had to get central locking and an alarm installed myself. I think the new Accents come with an alarm now though.
I have owned three cars and the MVi is the only one I have never had any second thoughts about after driving the car away.
I think for 11 or 12 grand the Accent MVi was an excellent bargain - just aswell I was looking for a car when Hyundai were looking for customers..!
Advantages: Newer models are more comfortable and reliable Disadvantages: Still not as comfortable as any of the French cars
...I buy but a 2002 Hyundai Accent. Yes, over time, Hyundai has improved this product vastly. So below, please find my original review, and my updates - which I have marked with the following symbol § to make it clear that this is the updated part.
(By the way, the original title to this review was: They should pay ME to drive this car) My husband has now had two of these cars issued to him from work. The first was a 1997 and now we have a 1998. Believe ... ...fixing this. What even Hyundai are unable to do is teach my son how to lift his foot off the pedal while driving!
Conclusion:
Even with the few pluses, I really hate driving this car. Since it was and is free, I can't complain too much about it. But if you asked me if I would buy one, my answer would be: They couldn't pay me enough to take one home!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
§ - I'm totally changing my tune here. I no longer hate ...

...I currently own a Hyundai Coupe 1.6 (see the review on the Ciao site). My car recently went in for a service so I had the misfortune of a Hyundai Accent MVi as a courtesy car.
While my Coupe isn’t the most luxurious and awe-inspiring car on the road, the Accent MVi really left my feeling like I was driving an old Lada!
On the plus side the car had a fairly good acceleration up to 50 mph, however when I got the car on the M62 and started to drive ... ...started to shake. My journey to Leeds was one hell of a boneshaker! Somebody definitely needs to take a look at the suspension on this model. Another side affect of this poor suspension is the horrendous noise that roars through the flimsy chassis.
The interior of the car is undeniably cheap, from the chrome effect plastic facia to the nasty cloth on the seats and the awkwardly sized steering wheel.
The Stereo was sub standard and there was nowhere ...

Advantages: sporty look, fun to drive, cheap to insure Disadvantages: electrics can go wrong, underrated!
...fell in love with a hyundai accent 1.5 MVI. its got so many good points! firstly the only way i can describe the drive is fun! a 1.5 MVI dual overhead cam engine in a big small car! its so fun to drive its unbelieveable. change gear at the right times and you'll suprised at the intial accleration from them! not to forget the shorter change gearbox for quicker gear changes and the fun learning to drive round roundabouts, i still havent conquered this ... ...and windscreen wiper controls are opposite as the cars from japan, it took me a little while to get used to this much to the amusement of other drivers while i sprayed my windscreen and wiped them to let people out at junctions! another thing is to make sure that the clutch was changed if you buy a 2001 model, these were called back a few months after production for a clutch replacement due to problems. not all 2001 accents made it back for the replacement ...

Advantages: Affordable, Reliable, Gas Saver Disadvantages: Low Power, Small Tires(bummpy ride)
...I don't own a new Hyundai Accent, but I own a 1997 Hyundai Accent, and I'm sure they only get better from there. I bought my car used, with 60k miles. I've had it for about 12k miles. I have enjoyed my time with this affordable vehicle. I first purchased the vehicle for its looks, cost, and that they are well known gas savers. The engine runs good, has a slight pinging noise, but I've noticed it on many other newer cars. I've had a slight problem ... ...almost unnoticable. The only time it is apparent is when it's really low and the car starts jerking into gear. Besides that, it's great. I've gotten up to 40 or so mpg on the freeway and about 28mpg on surface streets. The tires create a little bit of a bumppy ride...Bigger tires would help give a smoother ride. There is a mysterious rattling with the hatchback window which is a major disadvantage, but that could be from previous use. Another flaw, ...

I bought this car about a year ago it has just had its first MOT with me and had no repair work required. Mine is 5 years old now and has full service history.
Really great looking car, goes very quickly (0-60 in 10s) especially good on space and fun to drive compared with a corsa or other hatchback. Is better than an escort because it is so much cheaper to insure!
The car sounds sporty and has really good handling. It boasts electric windows, ... ...of course!). for the price you can pick these up for that is really good.
The only nad thing is that some people might say it looks a bit cheap inside, but personally i really like the gear stick and steering wheel looks, the dash is very plain and plastic but to be honest no one really cares!
If you are looking for a first car that will last you until you have a few years no claims, then this is the car for you. It is very nippy, can break the ...
