The Deskstar 120GXP incorporates both new and proven technologies to boost system performance. This drive provides the capacity and performance to handle a wide range of advanced...
more...desktop and audio/video applications. Additionally, features such as low acoustics, low power, and Tagged Command Queuing make this drive ideal for non-PC, high-performance and special applications. AFC and glass disk technologies enable increased density. Thus, the Deskstar provides the necessary capacities using fewer heads and disks, which means fewer components and better reliability. The superior density combines with the faster processor and streamlined cache buffer to enable award-winning performance for both the Deskstar and your system. Enhancements to the servo system and thermal monitor help to enable accurate data storage and retrieval. These combined technologies enable popular capacity points and are also designed to increase reliability. Deskstar drives continue to utilize proven IBM technology such as TrueTrack servo and No-ID sector formatting.

Can you possibly fill in 80 GB worth of data on your computer?

I can - all those MP3s, applications and games meant that upgrading from an exisiting 10 GB drive was essential.

Costing around £80, the Deskstar 120GXP did not come with any fixtures or fitting, leads or indeed, instructions.

If you are au fait with PC upgrades, all very well, if not you may want someone who is to install it for you.

After 'cloning' the data from my 10 GB drive to the 80 GB Deskstar 120GXP the first thing I noticed is how very quiet the drive is - only the flashing red LED on the front of the PC gives it away.

The drive runs at 7,200 RPM so is considerably faster than old 5,400 RPM drives. You certainly notice the difference - Windows loads faster and games and applications too.

Reviews in magazines have questioned the lifespan of this drive, if it used in an 'always-on' PC setup, but my PC is always on and I have not experienced any problems whatsoever.

I recommend this drive on 2 conditions - firstly that you know what you are doing when installing it, and secondly ask yourself if you will use even a fraction of that huge space!
