Flat bed allows easy removal of the scanner cover, enabling scanning of bulky objects such as books. Suite of scanning software includes Xerox Pagis SE and Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 for file maintenance and digital image editing. This amazing scanner is capable of scanning up to legal size documents offering 600x1200 dpi optical resolution, 9600x9600 interpolated resolution, 30-bit color and 10-bit grayscale resolution. It connects to computer's enhanced parallel port, is TWAIN compliant and supports features such as enabling copy and fax (software for these functions is not included). Adobe PhotoDeluxe requires 70MB of hard drive space, and Xerox Pagis SE requires 24MB of hard drive space.

...This is my third scanner, the previous ones having died. I chose the HP as it was supposed to give quite reasonable negative/slide scans in additon to the usual flatbed scanning.
Priced at around £60, it is a flatbedscanner. The top cover is removable, allowing the scanning of large books.
Incorporate in the cover is a 35mm negative/slide carrier. This allows the scanning of photgraphic material, and special built-in functionality provides for this.
Optical resolution is 1200 dpi x 1200 dpi, 48-but colour depth.
The scanner has its own PSU, a "wall wart" rather than taking its power from USB.
Installation was easy, and the actual scanning is of very good quality and reasonably fast. The included OCR software works very well.
There are buttons on the top for doing "instant" scans, photocopies, etc.

- If the software crashes on say, the 200th page, you lose it all. Furthermore you'll have do find the very large temporary directory yourself to clean up the mess
