The IBM Network Station Series 300 is the Internet network computer. It's the thin client of choice for organizations that need access to browser-based applications and data residing on the Internet or corporate intranets, along with graphical Windows and character-based applications. The IBM Network Station Series 300 is available in versions that support Ethernet, Token-Ring and Twin axial (AS/400) cable connections. Like all members of the Network Station family, the Series 300 helps speed application deployment and lowers your total cost of computing.
Advantages: Interchangeable processors Disadvantages: Its a desktop
...The IBM PC 300GL was origionaly made for the business sector.
The higher spec machine similar to the 300GL was the 300PL which some had AGP graphics and LAN comunications support.
This was the lower spec of the two machines but still there wasn't alot of difference.
If you wanted to have better graphics or LAN support you could fit a PCI graphics card or an extra LAN card.
Many motherboards of this spec had at least 4 PCI slots and for this machine that was enough.
Some machines were fitted with Celeron 233-333 processors and others were fitted with Pentium 2's or 3's.
The higher Pentium 3 machines were the better becuase of the extra 256 or 512 L2 cache which made processing quicker.
My origional machine had a Celeron 333 with 64mb ram fitted.
The machine i then upgraded to a Pentium 3 which had 512 L2 cache and 384mb...

Advantages: Compact all-in-one design, robust and portable, high build quality, attractive styling Disadvantages: Relative high cost, slow USB connectivity.
...Well my little Bondi Blue babe is almost 18 months old, and here's the review.
233MHz, how does that compare with the current crop of consumer PC's / iMacs? OK 233MHz doesn't sound like much processing power when you see ads for 700MHz PC's, but you've got to remember that the PC MHz rating is not directly related to that of IBM / / Motorola / Apple's PPC chip architecture. It actually equates to around 450 MHz, so it's not to bad. My machine has a 160 MB of RAM and is perfectly happy tossing 200 MB photoshop files around in it's memory.
What about the Hardrive, isn't 4GB too small? Yes, but after 18 month's of hard work, evev a 10GB drive would have had to have a couple of spring cleans on it. I chose the easy option and bought an external USB CD-RW (x2) and an external 20GB USB Harddrive. So storage worries are now a thing...

Advantages: IBM reputation, support, quality, Duron CPU, 200Mhz motherboard, 4X AGP slot, software package Disadvantages: No matter how much you dislike to be seen in Comet, I think they are the only ones selling it. No paper manuals
...to my older Celeron 366Mhz on a 66Mhz motherboard, UDMA 33 with PC 66Mhz RAM. I sloted in an extra 128Mb of RAM and it felt even faster. I'd say put in more RAM if you a bit more punch, - as I suspect Windows ME's overhead is quite great compared to 98.
UPGRADE: >
I also put in a 46 Gb IBM UDMA 100 7200 rpm hard disk (although the controller only goes to UDMA66) which also speeds things up over the original 5600 RPM hard disk. My total extra expenditure on RAM and HD was £40 + £129 = £169 bringing my total cost to £544 total. So now I have 192Mb RAM and 56Mb of hard disk, with additional scope later to add a real powerful 4X AGP graphics card (which you cannot do with integrated on board video. The motherboard can supposedly support Duron CPU's up to 1 Gig, so when the time comes for another speed boast, there is provision to slot...
