Manufacturer's product description
The IBM Half-high LTO Gen 3 SAS Tape Drive delivers enterprise class capacity at an entry LTO Gen 3 price point. The condensed half-height form factor now allows internal installation into standard 5.25-inch HH bays on System x systems. Take advantage of solid performance, excellent data storage capacity, a high-density form factor, and industry leading LTO backup technology with this half-high LTO Generation 3 SAS Tape Drive. The drive offers an attractively priced entry offering into LTO technology for mid- to high-end System x server systems requiring high-capacity, high-performance, and high-reliability tape solutions in a 5.25-inch, half-high form factor. Using its onboard hardware data compression feature and assuming a 2:1 compression ratio, this drive can store up to 800 GB compressed per cartridge at a backup rate of up to 120 MB/s.
Advantages: Fast, high capacity storage. Well built, looks good. 2 year warranty, No fan. Disadvantages: No fan.
...Freecom before as they've always looked a bit cheap and nasty so this would be an interesting experience. The box did feel reassuringly heavy though, a good start.

# What's in the Box?

Apart from the drive, the box contained a small light external PSU, a USB lead and a CD with some backup software.
The case is made of extremly solid and heavy aluminium with a silver plastic front piece with a sexy blue '400GB' light (yes, you can have sexy lights. Really.) at the front just to prove how big it was. The finish is excellent and I have to say, if this is anything to go by, I'm converted to Freecom. Unlike the picture here, my unit has the aluminium finished in matt black which looks really nice on top of my black PC. It's also surprisingly compact - not that much bigger than a hard drive at 20x11.5x4 cms...

Advantages: Big and FAST Disadvantages: None come to mind......
...This is the second Lacie drive I've purchased, the former being a 120Gb d2 drive. This newer 400Gbdrive features USB2 and firewire 400/800 connections allowing for connection to the more standard newer interfaces. I use a firewire 400 connection.
After looking at all the similar disks of different sizes, this model seemed the best for the price per Gig.....and this disk is fast! I use it on a windows 2K box, and it performs very well, and has not even been turned off for about 3 months. 3D animations stream off this incredibly fast, and the bottleneck if any would appear to be how fat the actual computer can deal with the data. I havent tested it, but I've heard that firewire 800 can be very cpu intensive....always best to get a good quality interface card to try and offload work from the main CPU.
Lacie do bigger disks...

Advantages: Noise, Speed Disadvantages: Can't think of anything.
...I came across this a week ago, and was taken in by the capacity and low-noise level. It seemed perfect for installing into a media center PC. Media Center boxes for a lounge need to have plenty of space for recording tv shows, whilst being quiet as to not interrupt the movies.
This hard-drive gives you the best of both worlds. 400Gb - an abundance of storage. (Ideal for ripping your entire music collection onto it) or for movies and downloaded tv episodes.
You're probably wondering what the difference is between this and the other 400Gbdrives on the market, and this one is quietly leading the way. Top performance, with whisper quiet acoustics.
My verdict - buy one today....
