The Thinkpad range of notebooks is, in my opinion, an excellent example of design genius.
My 760XD is looking a bit like old hat now, as it was made in 1997 and only sports a P166 processor, but has features that simply astound me, especially when compared to equivalent desktop machines.
Take, for example, the hibernation feature. Whilst being quite standard amongst laptops, how many desktop machines can actually suspend to disk properly? The power consumption tops 30W with everything running at maximum speed and brightness, and the Lithium Ion battery lasts a reasonable 2 hours.
Also in stark contrast to desktops is the Thinkpad?s excellent ease of upgradability. Just push the screen release latches away from you, and up comes the keyboard, revealing hard disk, battery and floppy disk units that can be replaced and swapped by simply snapping them into place.
My only slight niggle with this machine is that I am having problems installing linux onto it, although my friend?s Thinkpad 240 had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

I Bought a Thinkpad 770 for £400 afew months ago, and in my opinion, its the best laptop ive used. It comes with a capture card, Cd drive, USB connection. Its only a 266MHz but its done everything that i wanted it to. Ive only had one problem, which is still a problem, I need a new battery as the standard battery Will not charge, and the new battery will cost around £200, but its not bad when the battery has lasted 4 years. The screen has started ... ...it, and the light sometimes goes off behind the screen, but these are all quite easily solveable problems, just expensive. All in All i would recomend this laptop t a potential buyer, just if its secondhand, check the battery and screen. Try leaving it switched on for a few hours. ...
