Manufacturer's product description
The IBM TotalStorage Ultrium Tape Drive 3580 Model L23 offers high capacity, performance, and technology designed for the midrange open systems environment. This model incorporates the new Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM TotalStorage Ultrium 2 Tape Drive, which more than doubles tape drive performance over the generation 1 LTO Ultrium Tape Drive (Ultrium 1), up to 35 MB/sec native data transfer rate (70 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). In addition, with the use of the new IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 200 GB Data Cartridge, the Ultrium 2 Tape Drive doubles the tape cartridge capacity up to 200 GB native capacity (400 GB with 2: 1 compression). IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives can read and write original LTO Ultrium Data Cartridges at original Ultrium 1 capacities and with improved performance up to 20 MB/sec native data transfer rate (40 MB/sec with 2:1 compression). The Ultrium Tape Drive 3580 is an external stand-alone or rack-mountable unit, similar to previous models of the 3580, and is the entry point for the family of IBM Ultrium tape products. The 3580 Ultrium Tape Drive provides an excellent migration path from digital linear tape (DLT or SDLT), 1/4-inch, 4mm, or 8mm tape drives.
Advantages: Big and FAST Disadvantages: None come to mind......
...This is the second Lacie drive I've purchased, the former being a 120Gb d2 drive. This newer 400Gb drive features USB2 and firewire 400/800 connections allowing for connection to the more standard newer interfaces. I use a firewire 400 connection.
After looking at all the similar disks of different sizes, this model seemed the best for the price per Gig.....and this disk is fast! I use it on a windows 2K box, and it performs very well, and has not even been turned off for about 3 months. 3D animations stream off this incredibly fast, and the bottleneck if any would appear to be how fat the actual computer can deal with the data. I havent tested it, but I've heard that firewire 800 can be very cpu intensive....always best to get a good quality interface card to try and offload work from the main CPU.
Lacie do bigger disks...

...) the drive managed to hit 50° C on the top, and the sides sizzled a nice 54° at its peak.
Maxtor states that the drive’s tolerable operating temperature peaks at 55°C, so the temperatures are not a problem, certainly no higher than other 7200Rpm drives, as long as it is properly cooled. The drive is also near silent, even when I put my ear to it during testing it was hard to hear noise coming from the drive.
So, 200GB of space, Serial ATA, blistering speed, what more could you want? Not a lot.
As you can see by the tests this drive is among the fastest in its class, offers an almost unfillable amount of storage space, and due to its Serial ATA interface it is easier than ever to install (and manage the cables!). I would recommend this to anyone who is building a new modern system, or a fast workstation machine, or if you are simply...

...for advice on how much space too “upgrade” to, I tell them not to bother, do bother to just but two separate hard drives, one about 10GB, and another like this one, for all round data storage, 200GB.
▼what I think of it▼
Well, I think that this hard drive is well worth the money that I paid for it, and worth its weight in gold, seriously! Considering how much some companies are charging for it. You can get similar items on other sites, such as dabs, but they probably won’t be the same.
If you, like me, are looking for stability, reliability, and most of all the most amount data you can get for your money, then his had drive is for you. Its also very quiet, small, light and user configurable, compared to most other hard drives.
Think of it also as an investment, not just something that you have to buy every year, when...
