Manufacturer's product description
Just as your trusty old Pentium-class office PC's, which were top-of-the-line when you bought them, begin to slip into the great void of obsolescence, Evergreen's Spectra processor upgrade arrives to rejuvenate them. The Spectra is an affordable upgrade for computers with Socket 5 and Socket 7 motherboards, and is ideal for improving the performance of office PC's -- a great alternative to investing in whole new units. For most 75MHz and faster Pentium-class computers, it raises the processor clock speed, enough to handle the advanced data processing and multimedia software that your business uses today. This version of the Spectra uses the processor core with 3DNow! instructions, which enhance many popular software titles such as Quake II and Unreal. The MMX instruction set is also supported, for existing MMX-enhanced software. 3DNow! technology, developed by AMD, streamlines the way a processor handles common 3D graphics and multimedia operations, increasing the performance of those types of programs noticeably. Software titles must be optimized to take advantage of 3DNow!, and an established base of many 3D games, graphics editors, and multimedia programs already exists which is 3DNow!-optimized. The Spectra incorporates a voltage regulator and clock multiplier to compensate for the limitations of your older motherboard. Evergreen also includes a BIOS update disk with the Spectra, since you may be required to upgrade your motherboard's BIOS to enable support for the Spectra. You have the option of restoring your original BIOS in the event that the Spectra is incompatible with your PC.
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Not cutting edge -
...As the name would suggest, IDT's market for the first incarnation of its processor was the low-cost Windows desktop PC, used primarily for word-processing, browsing and e-mail. This next generation chip has a little more power under its belt, however, with support for the MMX and 3DNow! additional instruction sets, from Intel and AMD respectively.
Performance isn't really what IDT's all about, though. The point of the WinChip2A is that it's cheap, allowing vendors of low-cost systems or set-top boxes to put together PCs that perform pretty well but don't cost the Earth. And if you're worried about compatibility, your fears would seem to be unjustified. IDT has arranged for the WinChip2A to be tested by various bodies, including Microsoft, and it has plenty of seals of approval. Certainly we had no problems with it in our test PC...

Advantages: Good price, life time warranty, new technology for old pc's Disadvantages: Might work as a bottle neck, if your pc lacks RAM
...The evergreen Spectra 333 is a direct replacment for you old Pentium CPU, it replaces Pentium 75Mhz and up and offers a big boost in performance.
The upgrade uses an AMD K6 II as the CPU and comes on an adapter board that alters the voltage to make it compatable with your system, the heatsink and fan are also provided as are BIOS updates. It also uses 3D Now technology to provide extra support for graphics in games and general applications.
If you can not afford another another computer or can not afford to upgrade the motherboard and processor, then the Spectra 333 is an affordable compromise for your system. The price may seem high at first until you take into account that a new motherboard and memory are not required. The price is around the £120 mark, but cheaper ones are available. Easily a good choice if your old computer can...

Advantages: Easy to install,Lifetime guarantee and support, damn fast processor Disadvantages: Not suitable for beginners
...I had an old Pentium 100mhz CPU computer, which I inherited, and it seemed a tad slow (for good reason!).I had seen this upgrade available at various mail-order firms and saw that it was available for socket 7 motherboards,at Pentium 75mhz upwards.
The upgrade itself is a AMD-K62 400mhzprocessor with heat sink and fan.It has instruction sheets and the necessary disks to alter your BIOS and to benchmark both your old and new processor speeds.
I found it relatively easy to install, after following the instructions.Considering I had no motherboard manual,I was relatively pleased with the ease of installation. It has a lifetime guarantee and lifetime phone technical help.
I had to phone the technical support once, they were very helpful and useful, and resolved my problem quickly.
If you want your old pentium to be up to 400% faster...
