Motorcyclists who also ride their offroad machinery on road either for commuting or leisure, face a tricky problem, which tyres to use? They need to provide grip both on and off road.
Tyres designed for use offroad have wide tread gaps, great for providing the necessary grip in the loose surfaces found offroad or in heavy mud but useless and often illegal for road use. These types of tyre also wear very quickly on tarmac; buying a new one every month can get expensive. Conversely, tyres designed for road use, whilst providing good grip and wear rates on tarmac, are often useless or dangerous in the dirt.
What you need is the IRC TR8 4.00 X 18. This tyre provides for both types of use and is now a standard original fitment to Honda XR250 and 400s.
I have been using the rear TR8 for 10 months on the recommendation of friends much more experienced at trail and enduro riding than myself and have found it to be an fantastic all round tyre, providing excellent grip in all types of offroad surface, as well as on the tarmac, wet or dry, and despite its fairly aggressive tread pattern, it is fully road legal in the UK.
After 10 months and 4500 road miles on my Honda XR250 enduro bike, it has only just begun to square off (lose its profile for the uninitiated) and should last another 2000 or so before it needs replacing.
The tyre size is given as 4.00 but it measures nearer 5.00 fitted to the XR rim so might be a little tight on swing arm clearance for some bikes. Should fit most bikes
All in all a great tyre, good grip, excellent wear rates and a good price available at many offroad dealers, a web search should turn one up for around £45 fitted or £40 mail order to fit yourself.
Tread Nice balance between road and MX pattern.
Grip Excellent in all conditions.
Wear Around 6000 miles worth
