After the disappointment of the first ISS for Playstation 2, we have all been waiting for the ‘proper’ version, and I am glad to say that it’s nearly here….
For the last few years we have all been given some of the best football games every created, ISS has rivalled the FIFA series of games right from the start on the SNES , when FIFA International Soccer was put up against the mighty (Original) International Superstar Soccer. I must say that while the FIFA games have always provided all the REAL team names, stadia and players, they have always lacked behind in the main footballing aspects of the sport (Player movements, passing, shooting etc.
First of all I must note to those who don’t already know, that the game will not be called ISS Pro Evolution 2, it’s to be called Pro Evolution Soccer, with the Japanese version being called Winning Eleven 5.
They decided to change the name recently because they wanted to try and separate the two types of ISS Games. One of the types of ISS games starting out on the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) and Nintendo 64 with the other on Playstantion. Both are made by different divisions of Konami, the Evolution series made by Konami TOKYO. While the SNES and N64 versions of the ISS series were always good, far better even that FIFA they were no match against the Evolution series. Recently both have been popular and the N64 version has appeared on the PS1, this has just confused people. Konami are separating the highly realistic football simulation (The Evolution series) from the more fun, arcady (Super Star Soccer series).
***MASTER LEAGUE***
**WHAT IS THE ‘MASTER LEAGUE’?***
Basically the master league is a group of about 25 club teams competing in a league system, in a two-division structure. When you select one of the teams to control, you are given one with completly new players, with very poor stats, with your team being improved as you gain more points. It’s really hard starting out trying to get you poor team to perform; it is though a very rewarding challenge.
Teams are given a certain number of points for winning, less for a draw and none for a loose in a division 2 game, with points being doubled in division 1 game. These points accredited to the team can then be used to purchase players from another team. The master leaguer area of the previous ISS Pro Evolution 2 was one of my favourite areas of the game, it was a real challenge, but it gave you an air of satisfaction when you managed to complete it, (by coming first in the premier division).
The two-division system introduced in Evo. 2 was a brilliant aspect of the game and made the league system a whole lot better. Promotion and relegation are now an issue adding to the stress, excitement and most importantly the challenge.
The master league on the PS2 version has been though, been improved vastly. You can now compete against 8 extra teams, addition to the PS1 version. These are,
NEWCASTLE; (NEWCASTLE UNITED) PARIS; (PARIS ST GERMAIN) BORDEAUX; (BORDEAUX) LA CORUNA; (DEPORTIVA) ROTTERDAM; (FEYENORD) EINDHOVEN; (PSV EINDHOVEN) LA PLATA; (BOCA JUNIORS) PALESTORA; (PALMEIRAS)
Cheer if you support one of these teams....
The Master league also has a transfer system, enabling you to buy players with points has also been vastly improved. It was a ‘flaw’ of the PS1 version Evo.2 that other teams never bought any players, while you could. You could improve you teams players over a few seasons, improving you squad over your competitors. In Pro Evolution Soccer (PS2 version) other computer controlled teams also improve their squads, making the who league system very realistic.
Pro Evolution Soccer also lets you compete in a World Cup, European Cup, Konami Cup, World League, European League and a custom league, enough to keep you satisfied. Each provides you with all the realism and excitement of the real thing, it’ just an amazing experience. While it may not have the real stadiums of the tournaments it has the same stadia with differing names, if you know what I mean; a minor flaw in an otherwise perfect game of football.
The Evolution soccer games have all been about the passing aspects of the games and this version is no exception. Players are encouraged to play, through balls an on-two’s, you just can expects to ‘Hoof balls’ up the pitch.
***WILL ANY OF THE ISS GAMES EVERY HAVE REAL PLAYERS NAMES?***
Finally YES, this title has all of the relevant licences able Konami to have real player names. While not having all the real player names may not have annoyed me; you could either just recognise the names (just a few characters out), or uses the name editor and change their names. Player movement and physics, and the way the players interact with the ball is far more important to me in a football game. The ISS games have always provided supreme quality in the physics department.
***HOW GOOD ARE THE GRAPHICS?***
The graphics are just truly amazing, the best looking football game of all time, and that includes arcade machines. Many will be wondering how I know just how good they are, I have pictures of the Japanese version It’s a footballers version of GT3, they are outstanding.
***COMMENTRY***
The commentary has always been very poor on the ISS game, and while this game has no real commentator that we have heard of it has thankfully been improved. That are far more phrases available, due to the larger capacity PS2 CD disks.
***SUMMARY***
This has got to bee the best football game and will be the definitive purchase for any football enthusiast. The game builds on the mighty success (and it deserves it) of ISS Pro Evolution 2 on the PS1. This game will provide you with the most exciting most rewarding football game ever. It improves on slight flaws in it’s predecessor e.g. the graphics and player names, making it almost perfect.
***WHEN IS IT OUT?***
This game, very annoyingly is out now in Japan. But due to the differences in language and some little European tweaks this game I think will be released here in the U.K in the middle of October, although there hasn’t been an official release date yet.
ROLE ON OCTOBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
***UPDATE (24.09.01)***
I have just bought the first ISS on PS2 and that's a damm good game too. If you want a good PS2 footie game whilst your waiting for Pro Evoultion Soccer, then this is for you!
Advantages: Excellent Playability Disadvantages: Dificult to tackle / poor commentary
...goals with ease. ISS Pro Evo 2 is possibly the strongest challenger yet to the FIFA series of games that have sold in such large quantities for the Playstation. Never having played any of the FIFA games, I can’t comment on whether ISS Pro 2 is better than the latest version of FIFA, but it is certainly an impressive game in its own right. The control system is fairly easy to pick up. The cross button is used for passing, the triangle button for a ... ...scoring. Graphics wise ISS 2 doesn’t look too bad. Most games on the Playstation are starting to show up the age of the console, but ISS 2 is perfectly adequate. The fact that there is only a limited amount of detail that requires to be displayed definitely works in its favour. The intro screens are reasonably impressive, although you will tend to skip over them after watching them once. There are a variety of camera modes, although the ones that ...

...was not the god awful ISS available at the moment in the shops but the Japanese code for the up and coming Pro Evolution Soccer. And having got it from a source at Konami with the promise that the main game engine was going to remain pretty much the same, I can guarantee that this game is going to be awesome! For those of you who have been unfortunate enough to be deprived of playing these god like games I shall begin with a small introduction into ... ...the game engine and suddenly ISS 98 was a success. When ISS: Evolution hit the shops it went down storm and most agreed that it was the best footie game on any system. The next one along was ISS Pro Evolution Soccer and this truly did confirm the game’s status as the best on any system. When the PS2 came out, Konami decided for some unknown reason to bring out an ISS game coded by the original N64 team and this atrocity soil the good name. ...

...people that brough you the ISS series as well as the first Pro Evo game. Evidently showing an abundance of experience in bringing high-quality footy games to the public. However what makes Pro Evo 2 different from its predecessors is you can do pretty much anything.
If you threw Champ Manager in a blender with Fifa and added some 'scarily realistic' graphics, you would be left with Pro Evo 2. The game contains all of the premier teams from around ... ...to encounter. You can make your perfect team by editing stats, names and appearances of players to make your elite squad of players perfect down to the minute details. You have the option to buy and sell players on the transfer market to get some new talent if your team isn't doing too good, or to buy the other teams good players to make them easy opposition.
There are a number of different difficulty modes, which will keep you playing for hours ...

Advantages: New features. Very realistic. Disadvantages: Quite difficult.
ISS Pro Evolution 2 is easily the most realistic football game out. Although I only have the PS 1 version I thought I would write this opinion anyway. THE GAME
The actual game itself has brilliant graphics, great new features and awful commentary! It has a number of different game modes including the new 2 division Master League and the Cup mode where you can play in any of the continental cups like the European Cup. There are many different teams ... ...A lot of the players names are spelt wrong like Ronnaldo but that shouldn't upset too many people. The best feature of the game is that if you replace a poor master league player with Ronaldo then you can easily tell the difference as he is faster and much easier to score with.
THE MASTER LEAGUE
The Master League now contains 2 divisions so the aim is to get promoted from the second division into the top league by beating the best club teams from ...

Advantages: The greatest football game around Disadvantages: Laughably bad commentary
The trend in football games over recent years has been for presentation and graphical flair taking centre stage, while actual gameplay takes a backseat. Games such as FIFA have been too preoccupied with making Beckham's face look just like the real thing than actually attempting some kind of simulation of football. Pro Evolution, though, certainly redresses the balance, taking us back to the days of the classic Sensible World of Soccer, when playability ... ...are just breathtaking. At first difficult to master, it has a perfect learning curve and the genuine feeling that anything is possible, unlike the 'on-rails' feel of FIFA's motion-captured game engine. Although its presentation doesn't compare with the competition, for the true football fan, Pro Evolution is unsurpassed. With a big name commentator (who is Chris James?), more real-player names (Roberto Larcos is Brazil's left-back,apparently) and ...

Advantages: Plays brilliantly whilst offering acceptable first generation title graphics. Disadvantages: No official licence.
important than anything else.
Playability.
Frankly this game could have the worst graphics of any PS2 title yet released and the playability of this game would still give cause to merit a good rating. Just ten minutes of playing was enough to reaffirm just how incredible the playability of ISS is. If you’re going to be picky then you may well say that it’s not quite as fluid as the recent Playstation ISSProEvolution2 but nevertheless for a first effort on the PS2 this title is the best Football title available on Sony’s new console.
There are fantastic moves, fast gameplay and a really hyped experience as you play – something that is lacking in many other Football titles.
The Verdict –
ISS on PS2 isn’t the huge leap forward we were all hoping for. Some occasionally dodgy graphics and a weak ...

INTRODUCTION
Generally speaking, I have only ever been interested in 2 games series on the Playstation: Grand Theft Auto and ProEvolution Soccer (PES). This may well be why I have never written a games review before. Since the old days of the PS1, with International Superstar Soccer, I have followed with great keenness the various incarnations of this great game over the years; ISS became ISSProEvolution which moved onto the PS2 to become ProEvolution Soccer. I had 4 versions of this on the PS2, buying each new version with metronomic regularity. For some reason, I never moved past PES5 on the PS2, becoming deeply involved in the Master League subplot, where you can build a team in your own image. It was difficult to move on from a side of serial winners, regularly hoovering up every trophy going with reliable ease. That was ...
