I bought this book the week GMTV had Paul McKenna on for the whole week to discuss the techniques he uses in this book. I was convinced by Friday that I needed to buy it and got my copy in Asda for just £5.00!
On the first day McKenna took a group of overweight folk and sat them round a table with full cooked breakfasts in front of them - bacon, egg, sausage, tomato, toast, mushroom, potatoe scones - the full monty! All of them were then blindfolded before they started eating. They had ate the same breakie the day previous without blindfolds and calories had been counted after plates had been cleared... Amazingly, with the blindfolds on, and the instruction that knives/forks must be put down while chewing, (so you are taking your time and not shovelling food in).. these folk only ate around half of what they ate when they could see the food!
This first small exercise proved what McKenna states throughout the book - that people are overweight because
they are eating for the wrong reasons and ignoring the signs that you are already full. Your body will tell you when you have eaten enough, but many people were told as children to clear their plates or they eat too quickly.
Paul McKenna Ph.D. is a leading hypnotist who has worked with sports personalities and many celebrities (including Daryl Hannah, Ronan Keating, Gabrielle and Robbie Williams) and even royalty to help improve their lives. He is the author of many bestselling self help books such as I Can Make You Thin and Change Your Life in 7 Days. He now has over 1 million books in print and has spent several months in the bestsellers lists. He makes frequent appearances on national television and radio, as well as regularly touring the UK with his hypnotism roadshow. He also runs a successful training company.
Around a year ago I went for a short session with a hypnotist and I could not believe the effect it had on me. I had gone before a big job interview to help me calm my nerves. When the lady counted down from 10 I really felt a change in my body as it relaxed completely. I also felt dizzy when I stood up afterwards.
The book has 7 chapters and a free CD, the chapters are as follows:
1) Are you ready for something truely different? - where McKenna explains this is not a diet book as naturally thin people are not constantly dieting (also before and after shots of people his technique helped... Kate Howlett who lost 4.5 stone).
2) The simplest weight loss system in the world - McKenna tells you the golden rules of his system, which are very straightforward and common sense but not something you think about while eating. The golden rules are; Eat whenever you're hungry, Eat what you want - not what you think you should, Eat consciously and enjoy every mouthful, Stop when you think you're full.
3) Programme your mind to slim your body - where you imagine yourself slim and what your body would then feel/look like.
4) Overcoming emotional eating - recognizing when you are eating for the wrong reasons, eg comfort eating.
5) The truth about exercise - helps you get motivated to get exercise and busts the myth of no pain no gain.
6) Craving busters - McKenna gives you mind programming exercises that change the way you feel about the foods you crave.
7) Frequent questions - a selection of questions about how the system will work and what to do if you struggle with it.
The free CD is excellent and I played it most nights for a few weeks. His voice is very calming and it sent me straight to sleep (hopefully I was still taking the mesages in while sleeping!) Even playing this in the afternoon I find myself asleep, so as the warning recommends - never listen while driving or operating machinery!! I would only listen when lying down in a dark room. I don't no what he says in the CD as I'm unconcious, but he counts down from 300-1 and theres music playing..
It says on the back cover that McKenna has 70% success rate, quote 'I lost weight long term and re-established a relaxed relationship with food. I honestly believe diets don't work. Paul McKenna's mthod does!' - Kirsty Young
I would recommend this to anyone. At the moment I have lost about half a stone, and I have another half to go. I don't think I was very overweight, but I was certainly noticing a difference in my energy levels and felt it was time to do something. If you see this book and you have tried diets before please give it a go as its a much happier way to sort your weight!

Right, I'll give it a go (before my ever expanding waistline gets me stuck in a door!). Brilliant, well written and informative review. joe

I've seen the cd set for these, which I considered but was a bit more pricey. May be worth while trying the book, seem like it works for you. Thanks for the info. Catherine x
