THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS

Advantages: Great ideas and imagination
Disadvantages: none

'I Robot' is a collection of short stories written in the 40’s and 50’s, originally as stand alone short stories in Science Fiction magazines but here they are published as a collection. In these stories the nature and principles of robots are examined in detail probably for the first time.

It is interesting how Asimov viewed a future society incorporating robots. In this future Robots are built to look like humans, whereas in our ...
...rarely resemble humans. Asimov argued that since robots were to take over manual work from humans and that most machine designed to help with manual work were designed for use by humans then the robots would be built to be human like, to drive cars, cook the meal, vacuum the house etc. Maybe this type of robot is still to come.

The brilliance of the stories is not in their predictive accuracy of the future, Arthur C Clarke was far ... more

Scientific, futuristic, frighteningly prophetic

Advantages: Scientific, futuristic, frighteningly prophetic
Disadvantages: none

Asimov’s pallet crafts a world of fantasy. The scientific undertones providing a girder like realism upon which the skin of fiction is affixed. The composer, crafting his vision of art in lettering, leads us ever further into the glorious world of science fiction. As implied I would recommend any work of Isaac Asimov to the reader. But be careful the human eyelid will only stretch so far. I Robot I Robot is a series of short stories which evolve ...
...robot is suitable only as a child’s toy, but as the complexity of these artificial beings increase so does the intricacy of the story lines. The three laws of robotics* govern the robots behavioral pattern and Asimov plays beautifully within the confines of these three unbreakable rules to give us a book of outstanding grace that builds into a prophetic, yet chilling vision of the future. This book is a must for all science fiction fans * The ...

A book not just for Sci Fi fans

Advantages: Very well written and keeps you interested
Disadvantages:

This in my opinion is one of the best collections of short stories Asimov wrote. From the beginning he introduces the 3 laws of robotics, which are a fundamental part of the collection. Although he wrote more then one book on the robots this one is very easy to get into and unlike many of the other books each chapter is a whole new story which means that you can pick the book up and put it down at any time. This book is very well written and although ...

"Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent"

Advantages: Complex and clever yet not too long, ambitious ideas and very well-written
Disadvantages: Pretty much devoid of action, some very long dialogues

three more related titles, and was first published back in 1951. Its author, Russian-born Isaac Asimov, is perhaps best-known in recent times for his I, Robot story and its film-adaptation in 2004. Foundation is a quite excellent science-fiction novel that, rather than choosing to follow a single central character, tracks many different figures who are used as tools to help reveal Asimov?s grand vision. Set in the distant future, the story begins with Hari Seldon, a man who has predicted through a science known as ?psychohistory? (calculations using a gigantic quantity of human-based equations) that the all-powerful, all-conquering galactic super-power known as the Empire, would soon fall, plunging the galaxy into chaos. Seldon knows that with so little time left, the disaster can not be avoided, but with the help of his predictive science ...
