First and foremost forget the film, it is unable to capture the humour and intensity fully.
This is one of my favourite books, containing just the right mix of intrigue and humour, whilst running along at a great pace .
We start off meeting the major characters very quickly, and a battle of wits starts immediately, between commander Swanson and crew of a US nuclear submarine and Dr Carpenter, sent from London to join the Sub on a special mission to trace a missing ice station named Zebra. (needless to say this may not be the whole truth) !
Now the story begins with lies, subterfuge, lies, sabbotage, lies, murder, lies, one of my favourite lines comes from this book and if you read it, its the one about I almost believed it myself.
The story twists and turns with some great descriptives along the way to really bring you into the story.
A great read without going over the top.
Pick it up and enjoy.
