ICELAND SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN PORTIONS
My son loves KFC and I purchased these chicken portions to be able to give him a KFC type meal at home as we don't have a KFC outlet near to our home.
I found the pack of chicken in the chilled food section of Tesco's ( and it is available for online shopping), the cost of the pack was £5 for 1.3 kg. Looking at it in the packaging the chicken looked very appetising. It was packed in a plastic tray and covered in film with a cardboard sleeve over it. The sleeve stated that the package contained a selection of chicken drumsticks and thighs in a crispy American style batter and spicy coating - there was also picture of am American flag on the packaging to confirm this fact!! The nutritional values were on the front of the package also, and at first I was put off by the fact that there was 675 calories per portion. However I decided that this would only be used rarely and that it was probably better nutritionally than buying it from the fast food outlet as I would be oven baking it rather than deep frying it. So the pack ended up in my trolley.
What did I get ? Reading the package I saw that the ingredients were Chicken (89%), Vegetable Oil, Wheat Flour, Breadcrumbs (Wheat Flour; Yeast; Salt), Wheat Protein, Salt, Spices (Black Pepper, Fennel), Wheat Starch, Potato Starch, Rice Flour, Dextrose, Yeast Extract, Xylose, Spice Extracts (Black Pepper Extract, Nutmeg Extract), Onion Extract and Garlic Extract. In my pack (I would imagine that it could vary) were 4 drumsticks and 5 thighs and all were a fair size - I would say that there were four decent sized portions in the pack so not bad value for £5. There was a definate 'Southern Fried Chicken' smell on opening the pack and the portions all looked appetising, the breadcrumbs around the chicken looked big and as if they would be crunchy on cooking.
The chicken has to be kept in the fridge, but when it is opened it needs to be used immediately. It is suitable for home freezing - to be used within one month, but it is not suitable for microwaving.
I have cooked the chicken fresh and from frozen - from fresh it takes 40-45 mins on a baking tray in the centr of the oven 180°C, 350°F, Gas 4 From frozen it takes 50-55 mins. When the chicken the smell was really appetising, leaving no doubt what you were cooking. When cooked it was crispy, and not too greasy - although there was a fair amount of fat on the baking tray. The finished result went down very well with my son, he said that it compared favourably with the take away variety and that he would definatly eat it again. There was plenty of meat on the bones and the oven baking didn't stop the chicken from having a crispy outer shell.
The boring bit

Oldchem's Recipe
Now this wouldn't be an Oldchem food review without a recipe would it?
So if you like Fried Chicken but not the calories involved try this healthy vaiation, it is really very good.
OVEN-FRIED CHICKEN
serves six
2 teaspoons dried thyme 2 teaspoons dried oregano 2 teaspoons dried basil 2 teaspoons garlic powder 2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons fresh black pepper 6 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 1 large tub low fat natural yogurt 120g Special K cereal, crushed with a rolling pin or in a food processor or coffee grinder. Nonstick cooking spray.
Preheat the oven to 180°C, 350°F, Gas 4 In a large plastic bag, combine the thyme, oregano, basil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Shake well. Add two breasts at a time to the bag and shake to coat the chicken. Continue until all the breasts are coated. Place the yogurt in a large bowl, and the cereal on a large plate. Dip each breast in the yogurt and then in the cereal. Place the chicken breasts on a baking sheet sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the chicken is brown and cooked through. Do not cover or turn the chicken during the baking process. When the chicken is completely cooked, remove the baking sheet from the oven and let cool 10 mins before serving.
Summary: Worth having in as a quick snack or meal.
Advantages: Fantasic taste, great appearance Disadvantages: Can't stop eating them!
...be perfect, but I think Iceland really have got it spot on! Usually I tend to find that southern fried chicken is either too dry, or worse yet, too slimy, or just doesn't taste like southern fried chciken at all. With Iceland, it was completely different. The texture was just right - the coating was dry and crunchy, and the chicken was moist.
I would warn people against following the guide on the packet too closely - I've found that ovens vary on ... ...little tempermental - raw one minute, you turn round to answer the phone, and when you come back, they're burnt! I think really it just comes down to keeping a close eye on them - you'll know when they're done, because they look exactly like they do on the packet! (It might just be me, but this seems like a rarity when it comes to food, especially frozen products!)
Being my first food review, I really have no idea how to set about describing the ...

...get it quite right, but Iceland has got this smack on,
There is generally a good mix of Chicken drumsticks and thighs, so whichever your preference its satisfied.
Best I found is to cook them in the oven, keeping an I on them as to not over burn them, as with most products there is a cooking guide on the packet, but I have found that it is always best to use your own instincts and cooking abilities, frozen products can be a bit awkward to get right.
... ...nice and crispy, but not sore on the old mouth.
Also a nice golden brown colour.
They have got the skin flavour just right, we are very fond of KFC chicken and this is a very good substitute at lots less of the cost.
Also the chicken meat inside, has just a hint of the flavouring, without being over powering, and if cooked well, comes out a nice piece of meat, moist and white.
Yes you could class it has a kiddies meal, but I add chips and beans ...

...to KFC.
In my local Iceland they are 1.99 most of the time which is good as you get aprox 20-25 pieces in the bag. The chicken is not dry and the coating is nice and soft. they cook in the oven in about 25 mins, GREAT FOR LAST MINUTE.
You can cook them and eat them hot or cold so are a nice addition to a kids lunch box or party or as a meal with chips or vegatables or even salad.
Also being iceland they sometimes include them in the value deals ...
