Susan Spaull teaches at the celebrated Leith's school--high credentials indeed--and ... more
publishes a regular recipe column in Ideal Home magazine. Ideal Home Entertaining is a compilation of the best of these: modern, stylish dinner-party recipes designed to be assembled with minimum effort but maximum impact. Aware that not everyone is completely at home in the kitchen, Susan Spaull has ensured that there is nothing here to frighten off the novice, while providing a collection of recipes that would ornament a dinner party or provide delicious fare when friends come round for a meal. The recipes include versions of European classics, such as "Fillet of Beef en Croute", "Carbonnade of Beef" and "Rosti"--the kind of things that should be in everyone's repertoire--together with dishes that reflect the Asian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern traditions. Desserts are particularly successful. Among the mouth-watering meringues, fruit tarts and coulis, a dish like "Hot Chilli Pineapple with Coconut Ice Cream" stands out. With an eye to helping the busy working cook make the best use of time, the recipes are annotated with calorie and fat content, preparation and cooking times and whether the dish can be made ahead and/or frozen. Most are light: Susan Spaull makes extensive use of fresh, seasonal ingredients; and she is not afraid to give a vivid new twist to traditional dishes--her Seafood Lasagne, for example, an elaborate but speedy assemblage, is lightened by the inclusion of cottage cheese alongside the mozzarella. Sensible use of good-quality convenience ingredients cuts down on the cook's labours. All in all, Ideal Home Entertaining could do a great deal to reduce the stress and increase the pleasures of the nation's dinner parties. --Robin Davidson

Still waiting to move house, feels like I'm going to be here forever, how many people feel like that?? So what with chocolate in hand and a home magazine, life can be escaped for an hour or two (not the chocolate though, that's about 5 seconds)!
IPC media who publish this magazine is one of UK's leading consumer magazine publishers selling over 350 million copies each year (so someone else is trying to escape too! or they might be just a little luckier than me and have just got their dream home to attack with wonderful new ideas)?? reaching 70% of UK women and 50% of UK men - 28 million UK adults.
Other magazines they publish: Living etc, Homes and Gardens, Woman and Home, What's on TV, Now, Marie Claire, In Style, Loaded, Nuts, NME, Wallpaper, Country Life, The Field, Rugby World, Practical Boat owner, Pick Me Up and TV Easy.
IPC (International Publishing Corporation) is owned by Time Inc - the publishing division of Time Warner, the world's largest media organisation. To find out more about IPC you can visit WWW.ipcmedia.com it has got quite an intersting history of their major magazines.
Back to the mag - you can subscribe for 6 issues for £6 or monthly £2.99 working out to be slightly pricier than some of their competitor mags (around £2.80) it has on average 195 pages including the usual advertisements.
It includes:
Home ideas, where to find bargains, advice on typical in-vogue decor, gardening and DIY topics.
If you can't wait for your next issue, there's a web-site you can visit with similar articles - WWW.idealhomemagazine.co.uk.
If you write a problem letter and yours is the star letter you win a prize for example a cooker worth over £1,000, so it's worth having a problem to write about! It seems the ones that win are the letters that are a little bit unusual, for example "Where can I get a glass stair well"?
Their suggestions of what to buy are realistically priced for example in their September's issue they had an article on how to get more for your money showing £9.50 for a kettle, 50p each for a drinking glass and £129 for a set of table and chairs, all very modern and stylish, giving you a wide range of shops' examples, such as M&S, Matalan and Ikea.
Their articles are on the modern side rather than traditional showing how to achieve a "chic and stylish" room for a fraction of the price, giving you a detailed list and prices of everything in each photograph.
There's tips and ideas on how with a few finishing touches to an existing product can save money and re-fresh your decor.
There is a VIP club - competitions exclusive to Ideal Home subscribers.
It includes real reader's homes and how they achieved their dream home (mine's still in my dreams)!
Each reader's feature is around 7 pages long and includes how to achieve that paticular style, with examples of products, prices and stores.
There's a hot property page, displaying properties for a particular price.
They include a variety of homes, which should appeal to all ages young and old, with plenty of budgeting ideas. There are adverts - on average 1 page of adverts to 4 pages of articles.
This magazine seems to provide more budget as well as pricier ideas than others, which if you're like me, eternally grateful to even save a penny!
Articles on DIY had one issue detailing "The essential decorator's kit". An "on test" page tested kitchen appliances and ratings.
There are various articles for all the family including ideas for children's bedrooms, gardening (8 pages), recipes (8 pages), a shopping guide page, 14 pages of classifieds, mostly adverts with pictures, not just listings, a "finishing touch" page where one issue showed you how to display flowers, another how to hang curtains properly, there's even an "Ask the vet" section.
Summary
Slightly pricier than some similar glossy magazines, but it should appeal to a wide age range with a modern slant and plenty of ideas to keep you busy 'til Christmas!
...hell I’m on about…
Ideal Home is apparently “Britain’s best-selling decorating magazine”, the Consumer Magazine of the Year 2000 (Periodical Publishers Association), Circulation Excellence Award winner 2000 (Association of Circulation Executives) and comes out each month with a cover price of £2.60. Garn, you toffs, you know it’s just one example of a coffee table mag for those who have got more time and money on their hands than is really good ... ...family and friends say, ‘the ideal spot for a gardener to get to work on.’ So when it came to putting together this month’s issue, I was especially keen to ensure that our Garden Special would be packed with inspiration for every green finger level, including those who need a helping hand – myself included – as well as readers who are fortunate enough to have a well-planned plot, complete with established shrubs, borders brimming with colour and ...

Advantages: Colourful Glossy Superb Photographs Disadvantages: Lots of adverts for expensive items
...reading through the pages of Ideal Home is arguably the best method. At least it is legal. Ideal Home ,a glossy, colourful, monthly is published by IPC Publicaions Ltd, and is one of their "quality magazines" There must be quite a lot of people interested in the likes of expensive homes, costly furnishings and interior decoration, for the circulation is around 300,000. The quality is epitomised by its "perfect binding", ie,just like a paperback with glued ... ...and lovely furnishings. Ideal Home has "readers offers" usually for the likes of cases of wine or classy furnishings or household consumer durables. There are also a few shorter,ie,500-1000 word articles on relatively mundane subjects such as credit cards, insurance, dealing with the local council and Ideal Home also publishes a "letters page",for which they pay around 10 pounds for each reader's letter published. There is probably not a great deal ...

Advantages: A magazine bursting with home information and ideas Disadvantages: none
The Ideal Home..something that I will never own !
But just looking through the jam- packed magazine makes up for all of that.
A glossy covered magazine that is bursting with inspiration on how to design, decorate and furnish your home in the style of your choice..
But there are no articles that refer to `muddy boots and dog hair` !..a common problem in my home !
There are pages devoted to showing you just how beautiful a room can look, from the ... ...subscription is available for The Ideal Homes magazine, which is currently £20.50 for 12 issues, which is a great saving of 50% off of the full price.

Advantages: Glossy Disadvantages: Too minimalistic and changing rooms in style now
What has happened to Ideal Home Magazine..It used to be my favourite buy, but since having a new editor,it has become just another women's magazine - to me anyway.
At one time each page was covered with photos of beautiful homes decorated with style and character, however, this is no longer the case. The Ideal Home (according to the editors of this magazine anyway) is now cold, minimalistic and totally boring, only brightened with the odd use of bright ... ...look is, I'm afraid, not ideal for me as I'm far too messy and easily become bored.I need to be surrounded by beautiful, old quirky things(no I'm not talking about the husband). There is nothing in a minimalistic room that would hold my interest to any degree. If however, this is your style then the magazine may indeed be very appropriate for you as it is full of rooms which have been specifically set up with very bright colours and cheap and cheerful ...

Advantages: more style for your home Disadvantages: none
The Ideal Home magazine is one of the best magazines to me. I do buy quite a lot because I think they give more than an a simple idea, but create style, that makes you transform something having identity with you. Nothing is worse than living in a house that you don't feel at home.It is not everybody that can combine what they like with style, and Ideal Home is always there to help creating a new look for you,to help to plan what you are going to ...

Advantages: Funny and Innovative with some real bargains Disadvantages: Still finding it's feet, and has some tacky products
In April this year, Ideal World TV was launched on Sky's digital service (channel 642). I have watched spellbound ever since!
Ideal World is a home shopping channel, that was formed by ex-QVC presenter Paul Lavers, and two other cohorts from that cheesey station(QVC), Debbie Flint, and Steve Whatley or 'Whatters' to his friends. The backbone of the idea and provider of the infrastructure, was the Ideal World Home Shopping Catalogue-you know the sort of thing, plastic sheets, ear hair removers, ankle trusses, and other such glamourous items.
Ideal World TV launched big, with the glitzy opening day of tele-selling, opening with VW Beetle, which was draped in female presenters, and priced £15k, this was Ideal World's big attempt to upstage QVC, who to my knowledge have only dealt in toy cars, and was the first real car offered ...
Advantages: A goldmine of information Disadvantages: It may only be a dream but who cares
If you have ever thought about building your own dream home then I can recommend a great magazine to help you explore the dream further. It's called Homebuilding & Renovating and is available at a newsagent for £2.95.
This magazine comes out monthly and each issue looks at individuals who have built their own home, some almost totally by themselves. The articles go into great detail and always give the building costs, problems encountered and the savings normally made by going down the self-build route.
Most of the stories featured prove that self-build can be a very cost-effective way to own your own home. Another important aspect of self-build is that you can make your home much more eco-friendly and energy-efficient than the usual house developer will, thereby helping save the planet and also your hard-earned cash via lower ...
What a super magazine Your Home Is. I have been buying it since the first issue and as I buy a lot of these types of magazine because of my great interest in interior design, a magazine has be be good to live up to some of the competition. (There are many other great home style mags out there too).
What I really like about this particular title is the fact that the products they feature are affordable and the interiors featured use items which can be obtained by any of us. (Not like, say, IdealHome which includes products way out of my budget).
Readers' homes are trendy, of all styles, often colourful and individual (not just like showhomes) and there are always plenty of pages featuring garden style too. The July / Aug issue has a 'Decorator Of The Year' competition, which I might go in for next year - we're just about to move ...
