If you have a desire to look into the homes of the well heeled and the rich and famous then reading through the pages of Ideal Home is arguably the best method. At least it is legal.
Ideal Home ,a glossy, colourful, monthly is published by IPC Publicaions Ltd, and is one of their "quality magazines" There must be quite a lot of people interested in the likes of expensive homes, costly furnishings and interior decoration, for the circulation is around 300,000.
The quality is epitomised by its "perfect binding", ie,just like a paperback with glued spine. Almost all the pages are in colour and it is replete with articles and superb pictures of very expensive homes and gardens
. Although each issue runs to about 250-300 pages, this can be a tad misleading, since it also happens to be full of advertisements for an extensive and expensive range of home related products such as bedding, kitchen ware, bathroom equipment, and hoards of luxurious looking furniture, which I for one will never be able to afford to buy.
Basically the editorial coverage , comprising news and features , seems to extend to topics such as :
... Furnishings and decoration of homes, kitchens and basthrooms
From this you can gather the readership-or at least most of it-is highly affluent, very house proud, probably in the middle-age category.
Judged in terms of this well-heeled readership, this magazine publishes in line with their readers preferences and likes and dislikes. You will find plenty of very lavishly illustrated features of splendid homes in the "Shires" costing half a million or more or "superior" town pads in trendy Islington, Clerkenwell or Chelsea. There are plenty of pictures of gorgeous gardens, flowers, home equipment, beautiful bathrooms, well equipped kitchens and lovely furnishings.
Ideal Home has "readers offers" usually for the likes of cases of wine or classy furnishings or household consumer durables. There are also a few shorter,ie,500-1000 word articles on relatively mundane subjects such as credit cards, insurance, dealing with the local council and Ideal Home also publishes a "letters page",for which they pay around 10 pounds for each reader's letter published.
There is probably not a great deal of scope for freelancers although the shorter ,practical, type features might provide some opportunities. According to the Writer's Handbook, edited by Barry Turner, they do welcome unsolicited articles, at Ideal Home, as long as they are judged to be appropriate to the magazine.Prospective contributors wishing to submit ideas to Ideal Home are advised to do so in writing to the editor. No fiction is published. The editorial address is at King's Reach Tower, Stamford Street,London SE1 9LS.
This monthly "quality" glossy magazine has been published since 1920 and,as pointed-out,is clearly slanted to a very affluent readership. I guess for most of us on Dooyoo,we would find its coverage may be a tad out of our "bracket".However, despite all those advertisements it does live up to its "quality image" and for most of us,gives us a good insight into how the well-heeled and rich and famous live.
