    Advantages Advantages No babies!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Irregular periods.

I first started using contraception at the age of 17 when my boyfriend and I decided to start having sex. Our contraception of choice was the amazingly unsexy, condom. Over time, I started trusting condoms less and less and decided that I would go on The Pill as well. For about two years, I jumped from pill to pill in search of one that suited me, but to no avail. I also had difficulty in remember to take them every day and if I did magically remember, it would never be at the right time. This was when I started my quest to find the perfect contraception and I think I've found a contender. I ... more

Advantages Advantages no babies, no periods, balanced hormones, no hassle, last three years

Disadvantages Disadvantages small scar, some possible sideeffects

Implanon I am 21 and a few months into my fourth and final year of teacher training at University. Therefore I do not want to get pregnant for at the very least two years. I have been with my boyfriend for over a year now and neither of us enjoy using condoms with their slimy rubbery smellyness. Female condoms were a disaster and so I have had to rely on my pill taking abilities. Unfortunately, these are not too great as my memory is awful and I forget at least 2-3 pills a week. I've been on the contraceptive pill since I was 16 and it has been successful in preventing babies and in preventing ... more

Advantages Advantages Works for up to three years, does it's job, simple to insert

Disadvantages Disadvantages Side effects, having it removed can be painful

Well, if you've just been taking a quick look through the new reviews section, you're probably wondering what on Earth this is. Implanon is a contraceptive in the form of a small implant which is inserted under the skin of your upper arm, on the side closest to your body. It contains the hormone progestogen (which is a synthetic form of the natural female hormone progesterone) which is released into your body at a steady rate for three years. This means that for the next three years, you don't have to sod about with pills, condoms, diaphragms or injections. Have I just lost the male members of ... more

Advantages Advantages Keeps you protected from pregnancy, no periods.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Weight Gain, Phantom Pregnancy, Sore to get in!

I first looked into more reliable contraception after my surprise pregnancy ended up with my son being born. Despite using the pill correctly it failed to work for me and I didn't want to take that chance again, pregnancy, child birth and child rearing is definitely something that I only want to do once. Therefore after my 6 week check I made an appointment to have the implant fitted. With the high rate of success it seemed like there was no chance of it failing and seemed my best option. The implant can be fitted by a nurse at your local GP but not all area's offer this service, my local ... more

Advantages Advantages Almost 100% effective, no pills to remember

Disadvantages Disadvantages Side effects, getting it put in

I had been on the combined pill for over 7 years and I thought my body could do with a break. Being in a long distance relationship, I could afford to go without worrying about contraception for about a year, but moving to the US required me to look again at what was out there. It came down to a choice between the shot and the implant, and as I would have had to pay for the shot here in the US, I went for the implant. ***So what is it?*** The implant itself is about the size of a matchstick, 40mm by 2mm or thereabouts. It's slightly bendy, and is placed just under the skin in the inside of ... more
