Advantages: independent, informative, helps you save money Disadvantages: sometimes cluttered feel of the site
Martin Lewis has been running this site now for a number of years (well Feb 03)and yet amazingly has been able to resist the urge to make big money from selling advertising space on his site. As such this site is quite refreshingly free from unwanted pop up adverts proudly declaring "You are visitor number 1 Million, click here to claim your free prize" before proceeding to infiltrate your computer with every form of spyware known to man!
Getting Down to Business
The site is targeted at saving you money on a range of products from credit cards, phones and utilities, savings and investments, Mortgages, Loans and Banking, Travel and Transport.
I find the advice generally very useful to the extent that whether I'm looking to remortgage or change my phone provider I'll visit the site first to get some independentinformation ...
Advantages: Politically independent, sceptical, strong on the environment and civil liberties Disadvantages: Above average price, some unexceptional columnists
so much paper out unread.
Apart from those regular supplements, The Independent is strong on occasional extras. Many have been concerned with the environment. The two parts each of 'Your Planet and How You Can Save it' and of 'Disappearing World' are still among the reading matter available to visitors to the loo at my house! There have also been poster-sized environmental maps. Other extras, informed and informative even to someone who takes a close interest in the matter, have dealt with Iraq. Superb stuff, which I don't believe we would have had from any other British newspaper.

So, two years since the big switch, was it all worthwhile and, more specifically, worth the extra 5p a day?

Advantages: I learned something new Disadvantages: Too many pointless characters, plot loses its way
The "Information Officer" of Mark Mills's novel is Max Chadwick, a British officer stationed on the island of Malta during the Second World War. His job is to decide what news can be passed on to the islanders and the troops based there and, of course, what must remain secret. The situation in Malta is grim; the island is under heavy bombardment by German and Italian planes and it is proving very difficult to bring reinforcements to the island. The weight on Max's shoulders grows heavier when his friend Freddie, an army medic, tells him that he believes there is a serial killer murdering young Maltese women and that he suspects that the culprit is a British submariner. He tells Max that he had already brought this to the attention of his commanding officers but they hadn't acted on it. When the body of the latest victim is found she is ...
