The first thing I noticed about the cooker when it turned up was how ugly the hob was. I bought the thing online and didn’t notice the rings in the picture. The hob consists of four grey/black circles that stick out the top. These don’t change colour when they get hot so I have to double check every time I finish cooking to make sure they’re turned off. This cooker is pretty cheap, the main reason I bought it. All I wanted was a simple electric cooker with a grill separate to the oven. I really enjoy cooking and would like a Rangemaster or similar one day but as I didn’t have the space or cash decided to go with a simple inexpensive cooker which this is.
So far I’ve only had one accident - I left a plate on a ring that I didn’t realise was on and it exploded like a bomb scaring the bejesus out of me and my wife’s cats. Luckily the wife wasn’t in.
The other problem with the hob and this is my main moan is that the rings take forever to heat up but when they get hot they stay hot… really hot. Don’t try to make gravy on them. The dial goes 1, 2, 3, volcanic, nuclear, supernova and when you get to supernova don’t expect it to cool back down to nuclear within the lifetime of a Bolognese. I’ve since found that if I stick to volcanic and anticipate way ahead I can just about get the cooker to do what I want. It would be a lot easier if it were more responsive though and I still feel like the cooker owns me rather than the other way round sometimes.
The grill is ok and seems to work although I’m not sure why. There’s just one set of fixed brackets inside the grill for the grill pan and they bring it really close to the filaments but the food doesn’t seem to burn as I would expect, even when on max. This aside though, the grill pan always seems resistant to the idea of being put inside the grill. There’s no nice sliding action when you put the grill in and you have to jiggle it around to get it to slot in.
The final problem with this model is the size of the oven. It’s pretty small in there and I struggle to make a roast with it. I usually have to drop either my parsnips or stuffing as I can’t wedge them both in with the Yorkshires, meat and roasties. Apart from the size the oven works fine though and doesn’t seem to want to get as hot as the centre of the Sun in the same way the hob does.
I’m fairly resigned to the idea that you get what you pay for on this occasion. If I wanted to make life simple I’d get a big, expensive and probably gas cooker as it’s much easier to control the heat on the hob. I cope with this cooker though and am content with it until I have money to burn on a monster with more rings than Saturn and a double oven.
