I collected a form from the centre, completed it and sent it off to the Dfee. I received a letter of acceptance together with a membership card bearing my membership number and a brief guide to the ILA and how to claim the money.

How can this be? I hear you all ask, read on my friends and you too can learn about the mysterious fund that is the Individual Learning Account (ILA)
My local Adult Learning Centre is approved by the Government to use financing provided through the Individual Learning Accounts. I collected a form from the centre, completed it and sent it off to the Dfee. I received a letter of acceptance together with a membership card bearing my membership number and a brief guide to the ILA and how to claim the money.
If there are no application forms at your nearest centre you can write to the ILA at PO Box 26, Darlington, County Durham. DL3 9GB.
The application for the ILA is open to anyone over the age of 19 and is not means tested in any way, so you can even get one if you are in full time employment.
The first million people to apply get £200 deposited in their ILA from the government and this can be used to pay for approved courses and examinations. You just have to pay the first £25 and then the rest is free until you have used up the £200, providing you are studying on one of the approved courses.
The ILA also entitles you to claim 20% off some courses and 80% of others. The information as to which courses are eligible for discounts or full payment is available from the ILA centre on 0800 072 5678.
A word of warning though, if you do intend to use money or discounts from the ILA to fund your course make sure you join the scheme first – they will not pay out refunds as I found to my cost.
I was told at the centre where I study to enrol and then claim the money back so I paid in full for my enrolment fees. When I received my membership details I wrote to the ILA centre enclosing my receipt in order to claim the refund of my fees less the £25 that I had to pay, but they wrote back and said that they didn't pay out refunds under any circumstances. I should have delayed payment until I received my confirmation of membership.
I did get my examination fees of £42 paid by the ILA so I now have £158 remaining towards the cost of year two. That’s assuming I pass year one, of course!

If you are interested in the referral commissions aspect and think you know people who would also want to undertake training, then there is a referral scheme which works like this: ... ...unique reference number (hotvoucher number) and some further instructions. You can then send an email like this one to your contacts and, because you are using your own hotvoucher number, you will receive £20 for each one that signs up and undertakes training. Free training for them, £20 for you!

Basically, the government wants to encourage people to learn more and are prepared to give everyone up to £200 per year to do it. Sounded good to me.
You contact the ILA centre, fill out an application and send them £25 for administration (one-off charge). When they procees it, you receive a membership card with a reference number.

When I left school with very few qualifications I embarked on a nursing career and qualified as an enrolled nurse. However I soon found that my career opportunities where limited especially when they discontinued enrolled nurse training and where encouragine EN's to convert to RGN status. I felt that this was not the way forward for me and decided to look for something different. I first did a degree in psychology gaining a 2:1 however there are ... ...psychology degree unless you go on to specialise in either occupational psychology or clinical psychology but places are limited on these courses. I then stumbled upon social work, I applied and was accepted on the two year non graduate route. Adult learning grant
This is a grant that is like EMA but is for people who are aged 19 and above.
This works the same as EMA.
You apply by ordering a information pack online (look up in goggle adult learning grant) Then you fill all the details in but it is based on your income and not your parents.
You then have to wait ages and I mean ages on friend applied in August and It's now November and still hasn't heard back!
You are not guaranteed ... ...service is unacceptable aswell as when you phone up they put the phone down after a while as you are trying to sort out a problem and they don't give advice either or make up a pack of lies.
What I think I think that this is not fair. The people that get EMA are fine and can save the money or do whatever they like.
The people that can't get EMA cause of their parents are left out and cant receive anything

...so the advent of the Individual Learning Account (ILA) has come as a gift from God.
To be eligible the following criteria must be met:
The course must be one supported by the ILA governing body.
You must be over the age of 19.
The centre that you wish to study at must be a recognised ILA centre by the Government.
N.B. The good thing about this grant is that it is not dispensed according to financial means. The grant will enable you to pay a ... ...two hundred pounds is used. The balance you are expected to fund yourselves. I would recommend that you set up your ILA account before you enrol as if you don’t you will not get a penny back on the enrolment fee from the ILA.

you log on you are linked back to the page where you finished. The downside is that I get homework, exercises that I have to do using word or notepad, which you then open with you’re web browser. Or should I say I attempt to open with the web browser, early results are encouraging.
The down side to this site is the fact that some courses appear dated. Courses like Paint Shop Pro 5 and Windows 95 are showing there age and while I suppose they would provided a basic grounding in their relevant subjects many features would now be out of date.
Now payment, it costs £25 to join (how many bottles of Corona is that) but on completion of 5 courses if you can manage it then you get a refund. I should add here that the £25 lasts for one month only but you are invited to apply via a link from the home page for an IndividualLearning ...

WHAT IS AN ILA?
If you’re not familiar with the scheme, IndividualLearningAccounts were launched by the government to get more people into further education. They’re available to everyone over the age of 19 - they’re not means tested and you’re still entitled to one every year even if you’re working. In fact, it seems pretty difficult not to get one.
ILA’s are designed to cover part of the cost of further education - be it a language course, online web development training, or a vocational course. The grants won’t cover the entire cost of your training - you’ll be expected to pay something ...

Whilst searching round for funds so I could enrol on a computer course I was told about the IndividualLearningAccount. Unfortunately the course I was wanting to do cost far more than the ILA.
IndividualLearningAccounts enable you to enrol on courses by just paying £25. The actual course I was interested in cost £175.
PLEASE NOTE - People can only benefit from an IndividualLearningAccount discount if their account is dated on or before the course start date.
So what is an IndividualLearningAccount?
The IndividualLearningAccount is a way of helping people in work pay for learning for their personal development. It is : an account wich the government helps with, enabling people to take up discounts and benefits;
