As you may have seen from previous reviews when my baby was born 3 weeks ago he spent his first week in the Special Care Baby Unit, some of the time he was tube fed due to low blood sugar levels, however when he was moved on to being bottle fed a couple of days later we quickly discovered that like me and my husband as babies he was not very good at bringing his wind up, this would often result in him eventually bringing his wind up with what seemed like half his bottle of milk as well. Once he was home my midwife recommended a couple of things we could try in order to help with this problem, one of which was to try using Infacol on him, this is a product readily available and is designed to help with Colic, griping pain and also bringing up wind. We decided to give this a go, it wasn’t overly expensive so if it didn’t help we hadn’t wasted a lot of money, but on the other hand if it did help it would be worth getting on a regular basis.

Packaging
My bottle of Infacol came in a small rectangle cardboard box, on the front of the box is the name of the product written in red writing with various pieces of information about the product, the top half of the front of the box is taken up with a picture of a sleeping baby. The other 3 sides of the box are plain white and again contain various bits of information about the product including what Infacol can be used for, directions for use, dosage and ingredients. This is all written in purple writing and is clearly set out and easy to read. The actual product comes in a chunky plain white plastic bottle, this has a label wrapped around the whole thing, and as with the outer box it contains the product name and product information, this is pretty much the same as what is on the box and again written in purple on a plain white background. The bottle has a plain grey plastic lid which has a soft top to it, this doubles up as the dosage dropper and the soft top is used to draw up the correct amount of the Infacol, the whole lid simply screws on and off of the bottle.

About the Product

The Infacol itself is a white syrup type substance, it is of a reasonable thickness and reminds me of Calpol. The product has an orange flavour to it so that it is not unpleasant for your baby and is sugar, alcohol and colorant free which I was pleased to discover as I wasn’t keen on feeding Jayden something that was sugary and bad for him, I have to admit I have tasted it myself when I spilt a bit on my hand and it does have quite a nice taste to it. Infacol is designed to relieve infant colic, griping pains and also helps to bring up wind, for me the main thing was using it to help bring up Jayden’s wind after his bottles. Infacol is suitable to use from birth so again there is no worry about whether you baby is old enough to use this product.

Directions for Use & Dosage

Using Infacol is very simple, this was one thing I was a little concerned about in that how was I going to get Jayden to take it before his bottle especially if he was crying.

The bottle comes with a handy dropper attached to the lid, you simply squeeze the end of the dropper twice to draw up a dropper full of the Infacol which is 0.5ml, you then wipe off any excess from the outside of the dropper and simply squeeze it onto your babies tongue, this is easy to do even if your baby is crying. You need to give one dropper full of the Infacol before each feed, if you forget one dose then you simply miss it and start again with the next feed. The instructions do say that if you are using Infacol for Colic and it doesn’t improve after 3 to 4 days then you can up the dose to 2 droppers or 1ml which may be partially helpful before bed and the evening feed.

Side Effects

I did check the enclosed leaflet for any possible side effects of the product however all it said was that the product is not absorbed by your babies body and therefore unlikely to cause any side effects. However After a couple of days of using this I did notice that Jayden became a bit constipated and after doing a bit of research on the internet it seems that several people have found this to be a side effect of Infacol, however it only lasted a day or two and after that things were back to normal.

Price and Availability

Infacol is available in most supermarkets and shops such as Superdrug and Boots, it seems to be available in most places that has a baby section. We purchased our bottle from our local Tesco and 50ml bottle cost us £2.92, each bottle contains 100 doses. I thought this was very good value for money as I was expecting the product to be more expensive than it was. Personally I feel that just under £3.00 for 100 doses is very good and if it works well worth the money.

My Opinion

I have been using Infacol for about a week now, I give Jayden one dropper full before each bottle, although I have missed a couple of doses especially during his night feed, however this is not a problem. I was told that it can take up to 72 hours before you notice a difference and I have to admit that after about 3 days Jayden was bringing up his wind much better than before we started using it. He is still not brilliant when it comes to winding as he does tend to drink his milk rather fast and gulps down air at the same time, however since using the Infacol he does bring up his wind, whereas previously he often wouldn’t wind at all. In my opinion this is definitely worth the money as it really does work, I feel that it was excellent value for money and reasonably cheap to buy, however I wouldn’t mind paying more for it especially as it works and helps Jayden when it comes to bringing up his wind. I cannot comment on whether this helps with Colic as it is not a problem that we have however this is definitely a product that I will continue to use as long as Jayden needs it and one I would recommend to anyone with a baby that struggles to bring up its wind at feed times.
