Successful IT Projects in Excel

Advantages: Covers nearly all levels
Disadvantages: Lacks consistency

...targeted at those currently studying A level IT, the book aims to help students produce a better piece of coursework using Excel. As an A level student myself I have used this book a lot. The book is about 200 pages long and strikes a good balance between keeping it simple and giving enough information to the reader. The book starts with entering data and performing simple calculations, it gradually gets more advanced and finishes with macros. ...
...are good, the first is a sample project which can be used as a guideline when writing your own report. The second is a mark scheme, this is really a bit too technical and could do with being translated into 'plain English'. Overall this book is good but is lacking in some areas. Firstly the book tends to waffle in some places, and secondly the book uses bold type to show menus, buttons, important phrases and anything else that needs emphasis. A ...

Windows Vista The Missing Manual

Advantages: Broad coverage, lots of useful tricks, great writing style
Disadvantages: Nothing

With Windows Vista now out in the wild, anyone who has just bought a new PC or has migrated over from Windows XP will be wondering what hit them. The first tranche of Vista books are now upon us, some aimed at the more technical end of the spectrum, others firmly targetted at people who just want to know how to use it. Windows Vista The Missing Manual could be just what they're looking for. Windows Vista The Missing Manual comes from the rapidly ...
...any sort of familiarity with Windows and needs to know about what's new in Vista but in laymans terms, this is an ideal book. Absolute beginners will also find this a useful introduction to Windows Vista but will probably want to jump over some chapters for now. In short, recommended. ...

The perfect companion to Final Fantasy X

Advantages: Contains everything you could possibly want to know in the Final Fantasy X universe.
Disadvantages: Cannot think of any.

...in-depth guide to all things Final Fantasy X. A very well presented, strongly bound guide that will be your companion throughout the game. At a first glance it gives detailed background information about the main characters (not to mention beautiful artwork too!), the controls for the game and detailed information about the sphere grid (your leveling up system in the game), the types of skills and magics you can learn during your journey (and what ...
...overdrive attacks. Overall, Final Fantasy X is a very enjoyable game even without finding out all it's secrets. However if you are a completionist, you'll want the whole story and I highly recommend this guide to get you through it. Looking up specific information could not be easier thanks to each page being colour coded depending on what section you are in. All the information is presented neatly, can be understood very well and each page is a ...

MySQL - A slightly non technical review of a technical manual

Advantages: Very comprehensive, covers everything you need to know
Disadvantages: Goes slightly off scope on occasions. Lots of theory

Introduction MySQL (pronounced sequel) is an open source relational database management system. Known for its speed and ease of use, MySQL is ideal for developing database applications and websites. MySQL is a popular choice with home users and small businesses as it is a cheaper option than Microsoft SQL Server which can cost thousands depending on the type of license you purchase. The chances are that all of our ciao reviews are stored in ...
...learn all the quirks that MySQL had. This book proved an invaluable asset in the early days as I aimed to make my mark on the site. MySQL can be downloaded free of charge from http://www.mysql.com , so all example scripts from the book can be practised at no extra cost. About the Author Paul DuBois is a writer, database administrator and leader in the open source community. In addition to MySQL, he is also author of several other software ...

Great Beginners Guide

Advantages: Brilliant for beginners
Disadvantages: Quickly out grown.

Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes is a great beginners training book. It covers the very basic's of SQL that someone just starting out would need to know. It also does an excellent job of using analogies to communicate why syntax and statement layout is important. It mainly teachs the reader Microsoft SQL, but also cover's common tasks in MySQL and Oracle. The book starts out by explaining how and why we use SQL. Then moves on to some of ...
...and INSERT statements. It's a fast read, and builds upon the subjects already covered in the book. The book moves on to more advanced topic's such as JOIN's and SOUNDEX statements. The book over all is a brilliant guide to the basics of the SQL language, which will quickly be out grown as you develop your skills. I purchased the book just before I was about start a new job where I knew I was to be using the SQL langauge, I had finished it within ...
