I'm so Ex-Sited!

Advantages: comprehensive, user-friendly
Disadvantages: takes more than 24 hours

...patience. I chose the SAMS teach yourself book after searching through Amazon and reading various reviews of How to Build Website books, and not finding anything that struck me as useful, intelligent, affordable and up-to-date. I abandoned the Amazon search results (of which there were hundreds) and headed straight for SAMS, because I once worked in a university library where all the students were mad keen on the SAMS series and there was always ...
...few different titles available from SAMS for web building, but I chose this volume since it includes both HTML (the essential language for writing web pages) and CSS (useful for making your pages look rather fabulous) (more of these later) and is about the right thickness (i.e. not too basic and not too advanced). I was approaching this project as a complete novice- I didn’t know at this stage what HTML or CSS stood for or did, but I’d gathered ...

THE reference book for HTML4, DOM, CSS & JavaScript

Advantages: Covers every aspect of DHTML with excellent reference to browser inconsistencies
Disadvantages: Will slowly be going out of date - keep checking for revisions!

Dynamic HTML - The Definitive Reference, by Danny Goodman As a reference book for HTML, the Document Object Model (DOM), cascading style sheets (CSS), and JavaScript, this book is unsurpassed. The quality is something I've come to expect from the O'Reilly series of internet development books. Not only does it cover every detail of these topics (up to HTML 4.0), it also states which browsers, and which versions, support each element. This alone ...
...web developer. However, it is also clear that a lot of thought has gone into how the information in the book is organised, with good cross-referencing sections, as well as a good example-laden introduction and well-structured main sections on each of the technologies that combine to produce DHTML. If I were stuck on 37 Signals' desert island of web design with nothing but Notepad to help me out, THIS is the book I would want by my side. (ISBN 1-56592-494-0) ...

24? You must be on joking

Advantages: Easy to find information
Disadvantages: Not in great detail

...a 24 hour book by sams would be the best selection. The book cost £21.99 from Waterstones. The book is a paper back, but the pages feel as though they are made from high qualtiy paper and written is clear and easy to read. As with all 24Hour books by sams each section of asp.net is assigned an hour. This means that in each hour you are learning a new topic. This means that you will not have a great in depth knowledge of asp.net but more of a general ...
...prior knowledge of programming. If you have no experiance in programming go and find a more basic simplistic book. The book is easy to navigate if you use it purly for refrence and finiding usefull information in the exampels is good. At the end of each hour you are presented with a quiz, which is great if you are preparing for an exam. The questions asked are fairly simple though and the answers can be found in the back of the book. The book is ...

Not bad.

Advantages: Good screenshots and well explained
Disadvantages: A bit on the thin side

Cliff's notes are setting a standard in book guides for various subjects especially in computing. These guides are more personal and feel that more time and effort has gone into producing them. Presented like notes and written at a level which will be understood by all, this makes the learning process easier. The HTML language turns out to be very easy after using this book. Also, this book encourages you to read the source code of every web-page ...

Easy introduction to HTML

Advantages: Simple introduction to HTML
Disadvantages: No depth (but then it is just an introduction)

...is an easy introduction to HTML (the general mark up language that explains to browsers how to display text/pictures when a web page is displayed). The book assumes no prior knowledge and then gently leads you through a (short) introduction to the internet, URLs, Basic HTML, Images, Image Maps, Tables, Forms, Frames, Sound and Video, Active Content, CGI and an index. Note that although more complex subjects (Active Content, CGI) are discussed they ...
...basic webpage without resorting to HTML producing word processors/programs that produce much larger HTML files. Hand coding you own HTML will speed up download times as the HTML file will be smaller. It took me less than hlf a day to take in the content of the book (I have used other general markup languages in the past - VM/Script for those with mainframe backgrounds!). A novice would be able to use this book to teach them HTML in a couple of days. ...
