Windows Vista The Missing Manual

Advantages: Broad coverage, lots of useful tricks, great writing style
Disadvantages: Nothing

With Windows Vista now out in the wild, anyone who has just bought a new PC or has migrated over from Windows XP will be wondering what hit them. The first tranche of Vista books are now upon us, some aimed at the more technical end of the spectrum, others firmly targetted at people who just want to know how to use it. Windows Vista The Missing Manual could be just what they're looking for. Windows Vista The Missing Manual comes from the rapidly ...
...any sort of familiarity with Windows and needs to know about what's new in Vista but in laymans terms, this is an ideal book. Absolute beginners will also find this a useful introduction to Windows Vista but will probably want to jump over some chapters for now. In short, recommended. ...

Introducing Windows Vista

Advantages: Fair coverage, plenty of screen shots.
Disadvantages: Not too sure of its target audience

...how does it fair? Introducing Microsoft Windows Vista is aimed at existing Windows users, administrators and developers and as such tries to be all things to all men. Alas it doesn't really offer enough for any one audience but as a taster of things to come, it offers adequate coverage. I did feel ordinary users may get turned off by the more technical sections yet those who need more in depth coverage will find some sections too lightweight. The ...
...others. The rest of Introducing Windows Vista covers networking in some detail and how to support Vista once deployed. Again, this was definitely a section for the advanced user and did offer some useful content, particulary for those tasked with planning deployemnt in their organisation. Conclusion I do feel that Microsoft Press got this book somewhat wrong. In trying to keep everyone happy it ended up having large chunks of book that will be ...

Blistering, Breakneck - KILLER Graphics!

Advantages: Good screenshots
Disadvantages: Didn't include the new Voodoo cards

I must say that this book has really helped my system to become the speed demon that is needed for modern 3D games. The book is full of handy tips with some that do not take more than a few clicks! There are easy steps plus screenshots to help you. There are, however, methods that take a little programming know how and a little more time. Even though, the results are promising and you actually do feel and see a change in performance. This book, I ...

Not bad.

Advantages: Additional CD
Disadvantages: Not much

A book that explores the world of programming opportunties that Windows 2000 has opened up to the consumer. This book is very heavy because it is not for the novice programmer providing complex techniques which require a good understanding of the C++ language. If you are fluent in this language then this book will guide you no end to successful develpoment in the Windows 2000 environment and is a very good buy despite the price tag. Security being ...
...giving you an insight into how it is done and how it can be incorporated into your projects. The accompanying CD provides online tuition and sample projects that give you a stepping stone to development. The CD was the best feature of this book and contained a hoard of tips an source code. Do not be deterred by the price as this book is magnificent. ...
