...Its the end of the world as we know it... Well, it is if you are living in Britain in the 1980s according to Martin Amis' novel London Fields.
Amis' novel follows themes of nuclear holocaust and metefictive writing. it is an incredibly postmodern novel. However, it isn't a novel that seems to try too hard to be clever. I found myself laughing along at certain comments and the over the top characters of his twisted plot.
His characters are very specifically labelled from the beginning. nicola is the "murderee", Keith is the "muderer" and Guy is the "foil". Such labelling already guides us towards assumptions about the plot and the direction of the book and how we expect the characters to act.
Amis does refer to many other texts in his writing, but the beauty of London Fields is that you don't need to have read these to be able...

...Whilst browsing through a library for something completely unconnected, I found this book, and as someone who visits London regularly, I was interested to see what this book had which others have missed before. The size of the book may seem daunting to start with, but that is simply because it is so comprehensive. I have raed many "guide books" before, and they have all been useful in their own specific areas, but this is useful in nearly all subjects concerning London. In the introduction, the author stresses that it is not a guide book, but simply a book ABOUT London. It does not contain much information about shopping specifically, yet there is a section about where to go for certain items and he goes through areas geographically.
