It is made by a company called InsightGuides who specialise in creating travel guides to various places around the world. The company was founded in 1970 with the first guide created by German Hans Hoefer as he travelled from Europe into Asia. He then went on to produce a number of other guides to the Asian cotenant before moving onto the rest of the world. He then sold his shares in the guides to a German company, who formed the InsightGuides concept, producing 400 different guides in association with The Discovery Channel.

The Insight / Discovery Channel guide to Venice is an extremely comprehensive guide to the city: it includes a section detailing Venice's history, notes about the Venetian people themselves, 13 features covering aspects of the city's life and culture, ranging from Venetian cuisine to La Fenice Opera house to the Venice of Giacomo Casanova. The main body of the book is a visitor's guide to the sights and the guide finishes with a comprehensive Travel Tips section packed with essential contact addresses and numbers. The book also includes 14 maps and hundreds of photographs.
I bought this guide in preparation for spending three months in Venice last autumn and found it very useful for getting an idea of Venetian culture and life. The guide is extremely readable and I read much of it before actually setting off for Venice. One ...

The Barbados guide is a chunky 350+ page softback, in A5 format - it feels reassuringly heavy and sturdy, well it should do for a RRP of £16.99. There are many guidebooks available for the Caribbean islands, but this one immediately attracted my attention due to it's quality glossy pages.
This guide wasn't written by just one or two people, but a long list of contributors, and also many different photographers. Many of the contributors are award winning writers or well known for other travel books. This is reassuring in the fact that the text is going to be a quality read.
