INSPECTOR MORSE.
After reading several of your well written opinions, people, I see that I may be going out on a limb here. It appears that many of you, if not all, are big Morse fans. Personally, I think it was the biggest load of old twoddle on the TV.
We have John Thaw, who was once a big star in the Sweeney, trying to resurrect his ailing career as another copper.
This time, rather than shouting, screaming and getting angry with Dennis Waterman, he is trying to solve crime the clever way.
During his shows, Morse is sent to solve crimes along with his sidekick, Lewis. These long drawn out "Hunt the killer" programmes fail to capture my imagination or interest.
Screened on ITV, it had competition from several other similar types of show. The ones where the good guy takes between 1 and 2 hours of prime time viewing to solve a murder/mystery. We had "Cracker" on ITV as well as "A Touch of Frost".
Morse, I think, failed to capture my heart the way the other 2 did. The other two had interesting senarios and plots. Morse just seemed to be middle aged television for middle aged people. The younger generation were just no captivated by it the way the 50 somethings were.
Then again, It is that audience it is aimed at. Who else is in at that time of night during its viewing? Sometimes 8 and sometimes 9pm.
True it did win awards for its creativity and drama but remember who vote for these awards.... Probably the same type of people who vote badly at the Oscars or BAFTA awards. Crinkly old men who no nothing about the real world.
I do rate Shaw as a good actor. He is very versatile as we see in "Goodnight Mr Tom". He shuns his Cop persona and becomes a loveable old man with a beard. Very touching im sure.
He also hops onto the other side of the legal field and dons a wig in Kavanagh QC. Another John Shaw programme that does not hold my interests.

Or,
Wait for the enivitable repeats. That was the biggest problem with the Cracker/Frost/Morse saga. They only made a few of each but got repeated about 10 times each. Suspense programming does not work so well after watching the same episode 28 times!
Tried to find a website that did not like him but could not find one. Obviously you all love him so much!

I missed the original series as I was working abroad, so I welcome the repeats. The books by Colin Dexter get right into the heart of the character of Morse which John Thaw personifies very well. The author intended and created a cop who was more analytical rather than action centred. This was a great challenge to John Thaw and a credit to him and the author.

This wasn't particularly objective and the actor who plays Morse is John Thaw not John Shaw!!! Mike
