Integral SD Card Reader

Intro

I needed an SD HC card for a camera so I bought one on Amazon and thought everything would be OK. Well it was with the card the problem as it turns out is that my internal PC card reader is not equipped to read the new High Capacity SD cards, so a reader/adaptor was required.

I couldn’t believe that this was only £2 on Amazon and with free postage, so I jumped at the chance to get one. There were others on offer at much-increased prices, but I only required one to read the card from my camera. My camera can use the standard SD card, but I was advised to get an SDHC card since it was quicker and could store more pictures.

The Integral card reader can be used for all SD cards, but it is specifically designed to function best with the new HC ones. Since my PC card reader could not read it I have no real comparison as to its speed, but what I can say is that the transfer of pictures and indeed data, was pretty much instantaneous, I saw no appreciable lag and everything was very quick. I’m guessing here only, but I think that since the card is going through several instead of one device you might expect a little bit of lag. Firstly the reader has to read it then is has to be transferred through the USB port then it has to be put in the selected folder, but even through this I did think it was quicker than my normal SD card transfer.

The reader is recognised by my PC as a disk drive and once the card has been put in the available slot the data is displayed as it is for any folder. Leaving the reader connected to the USB port means that the drive is still visible in the computer menu, but either by selecting it is the safely remove USB device logo in the taskbar or simply removing it will disappear from the my computer menu.

Basically you just plug it in when required and unplug it when it isn’t. I have had no problems at all with this nice looking little white reader. It looks very similar to those pen drives, which have become so popular for saving all those important files. It’s very lightweight and looks quite cool.

Summary

For £2 you can’t really go wrong can you, and what’s more it does the job which is all you can ask of a device such as this. I was impressed by both the price and the efficiency of this little wonder, and am so glad I can get pics back onto my PC again.
