It's hard to say what PC digital video cameras are actually used for in the UK. Few people actually send video e-mails to each other - once flamed for bandwidth abuse, twice shy - while video-conferencing here remains a minority pasttime, at least until the days of truly free Internet access arrive.
Yet the things continue to sell, particularly when backed by a good name. Intel's PC Camera Pro Pack includes the camera itself, plus all the necessary cabling and software. The camera is a rather large grey/blue unit, attached to an extraordinarily long USB cable. Unusually, there's also a composite input at the rear, allowing keen home video enthusiasts to download movies from their camcorders. This is a neat touch, and saves such people investing in decoder cards or multi-function graphics cards.
Once the software has been installed (before the cable is plugged in - there's a note to this effect on the box, so support calls from this should be minimal), the camera can be plugged in and, once its shutter has been opened, used. The Create and Share software bundled with the device includes tools for adding videos to e-mails, editing movies and pasting photos into other images. VideoPhone software is also included, as is the option to use the camera as a security device, capturing images at pre-set intervals and then e-mailing them or storing them locally.
For those who wish to use the camera as a digital still camera - with a resolution of 640 x 480 - the long cable comes into its own, and there's a single button on the top of the unit that acts as the 'snapshot' button.

I had it for just over a week now and its pictures are crisp and clear, with sharp detail and accurate color.
