I have encouter the use of AMD, Cyrix and Pentium CPU's. I have had nothing but problems until I got my hands onto a Pentium 3 coppermine. The performance is great, but, yes the price is a little high. The way I look at it, companies like Microsoft, Activision, Sierra; they all have Intel based systems with Intel chipsets that they use to design software. My question is, why would you want anything different than what the software you run has been developed on?. These companies have a need to use other CPU based systems to make sure that their software will run on them.
I only suggest the use of an AMD or Cyrix processor if you don't want your computer to work to hard. Applications like MS Word and internet use are not too processor dependent. But if you need Horse Power to run 3D applicationss and don't want to spend $300 on a video card to compensate for your processors short commings, go and use an Intel processor.
For a basis to support my opinion, my best friend Jarred. He has built two machines that he plays on. One is a P3 600Mhz, and the other is an AMD 1GHz based machine. They both have the a 3DFX Vodoo 4500 video card and a Sound Blaster Live sound card in them. He keeps telling me that playing games like Unreal Tournment and NFS: Porche Unleashed run faster on his P3 600Mhz over his AMD 1GHZ!!! He only uses his AMD for internet browsing now, becuase it can run applications faster, but not 3D rendered games which are more math intensive.
