The Intel Pentium III processor offers great performance for today and tomorrow's applications, as well as quality, reliability, and compatibility from the world's leading...
more...microprocessor company. The Pentium III processor enables higher polygon counts and advanced lighting effects, which can provide software and Web sites with more lifelike surfaces, more objects rendered in a given scene, and amazing shadow effects and reflections rendered in real time. The performance of the Pentium III processor enables software developers to incorporate a greater degree of realism and interactivity. Imagine flight simulators with wings that actually flex, driving simulations with suspension that actually works, or gaming characters with fingers that can touch and grasp. The Pentium III processor can provide better responsiveness with your graphics software by offering increased frame rates, color depths, and image processing algorithms. This means you can work with large, complex images and digital photographs without the wait. Because video files tend to be large, all the benefits of the Pentium III processor realized for still imaging are even more important for editing and viewing video. In addition, the performance capabilities of the processor allow for real-time MPEG-2 video encoding and editing and great performance for streaming video - resulting in higher-quality video on the Internet.

Long ago....and i mean long ago, Intel ws well known for their brilliant processors, ruling over all the over makes like AMD, Cyrix who were the leading competitors to the brilliance of Intel. It must have been prolonged period at the No. 1 seat for processors that Intel decided they will slack off a bit, and this is when AMD released their Athlon processor. Everybody's expectations were that the AMD's new offering was going to be rubbish and another failed attempt to beat Intel. But the Athlon was to everyone's surprise actually beat the Intel line of processors andfrom then on Intel tried to pick up the pace and curently in the race to compete for the No.1 slot in the processor market.

AMD's recent offerings into the CPU market has been very good and nearly at every clock speed it has beaten the Intel PIII line of processors. It's hasn't be long since the release of the 1GHz processors, intel was the first to officially release theirs in an attempt to try and regain the CPU market, and not long after their release, AMD followed in pursuit. Since then Intel has start to reduce the gap between them and AMD. Intel's PIII Ghz processors is now neck and neck with AMD's Ghz processors as tests suggest. Whether it is with RAMBUS or not it's still offering equal if not better in performace to AMD's Athlon and Thunderbird CPUs. AMD processors are cheaper to buy than Intel PIII's, but if you can afford it then go for the PIII at Ghx speed, they are more reliable than Athlons of Thunderbirds, but you will need to pick a very good motherboard for it to last and to be able to ensure you can squeeze the last bit of processing power out of your CPU.

Anything below about 900MHz irecommend AMD because they are the better to the two, mainly to how the CPUs were manufactured. But for CPUs creeping over that 900MHz mark it's upto you what you choose to buy because Intel has managed to match the performace of the AMD processors at this clock speed. One draw back would be that the PIII is a bit more expensive. Apart from that i would certainly go for a PIII.
