...tag given to Intelprocessors is somewhat unjustified.
For example my PIII 600 in May 2000 - cost £240 running at 800mhz. An 800mhz PIII at the time was approx £500, enough to get a top of the range graphics card and change. Admittedly there are some "hidden" costs to the overclocked version e.g. a good quality mainboard, roomy case for good airflow, and a better heatsink, but I think that these are good practice in building any computer, the other minus is there's no guarantee that the processor you get will sucessfuly overclock.
I would however still recommend the PentiumIII, it's a good, fast and stable processor even when pushed towards it's limits....

A top chip! Review ofIntelPentiumIII 1.13 GHz processorby

Advantages: fast, new Disadvantages: expensive
...I upgraded from an IntelPentium II 450 mhz to the new IntelPentiumIII 700 mhz mainly because of the upgrade offer at a low cost. I found that immediately there was a noticeable difference and just the way in which my computer carried out every day tasks like opening programs and the likes seemed to fly through as if my old chip was carrying 4 suitcases with it on it's chores! I find no problems at all with it and I would seriously recommend it to anyone after a high speed processor with lightning speed and good capabilities....

...claims that the purpose of this serial number is to improve the security of online transactions, but its inclusion has been condemned by several civil rights organisations. Apparently as a result of this, Intel is currently developing a piece of software that will 'turn off' this feature if the user so wishes.
Verdict
Intel now has at least three different desktop processor ranges to its name. The PentiumIII will almost certainly offer much higher clock speeds in the next year than the Pentium II, potentially exceeding 600MHz. Intel is unlikely to have things all its own way, since AMD and Cyrix have their own plans for new processors this year, but for now the fastest mainstream desktop processor for the Windows platform is a PentiumIII....
