Manufacturer's product description
The Intel Pentium III Xeon processor is Intel's advanced, powerful processor for the entry to mid-range server and workstation segments. It provides the best choice for the entry to mid-range servers and workstations solutions running on advanced operating systems. The Dual Processing Intel Pentium III Xeon processor utilizes a 133 MHz system bus that provides scalability to meet most entry to mid-range computing requirements. The Intel Pentium III Xeon processors are the latest Intel branded processors specifically designed to meet the demands of entry to mid-range server and workstation requirements. They integrate the P6 Dynamic Execution micro-architecture, Dual Independent Bus (DIB) Architecture, Advanced Transfer Cache (ATC), Advanced System Buffering (ASB), a dual processing, multi-transaction system bus and advanced manageability features that provide the best level of performance and features for the entry to mid-range segments. For workstation applications, Streaming SIMD Extensions deliver faster, richer development of digital content for special effects, rendering, 3D painting and texturing, and also speed the display of high-end 3D graphics for applications with 3D modeling and mechanical CAD. Streaming SIMD Extensions in server applications provide network performance headroom via benefits to TCP-IP Internet applications as well as performance improvements to memory or cache intensive applications. Pentium III Xeon processors provide a variety of advanced features that enhance the ability of a server platform to monitor and protect the processor and its environment as well as to help customers create a robust IT environment, maximize system uptime, and ensure optimal configuration and operation of their servers.
Advantages: Established, good value, stable, large L2 cache Disadvantages: Not the cheapest nor the best performing
...This processor, based on the highly successful PentiumIII core is well established in servers - the large (up to 2mb) L2 cache allows good server performance for multiple users. It can be used in dual or quad array, and currently is available in speeds of up to 800mhz. New competitors in the field, including P4 Xeon and AMD MP Athlon 'Palomino' may be ahead in terms of performance, but currently P4 Xeons cost the earth, and P4 is doubted to be much better performers than PIII anyway. The AMDs are currently unreleased to the market, therefore leaving the PIII to take up the slack in small server markets. Its core enhances over the PII Xeon make it a more viable option, and price drops to keep the PIII competitive with AMD and P4 make it economically sensible. The PIII's stability (key feature for a server) plays an important role...

...The IntelPentiumIII800MHz simply takes hardware to the next stage.
After upgrading from my PII 350 MHz I found not only did Windows 98 and other products 'start' and run faster, but the 3D graphics on games such as Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament were improved significantly (without the upgrade of the 3D Card). The internet also operated faster, download time seemed to increase marginally. The price shouldn't discourage either. All in all, until the P4 1500MHz (!!!) is released this is simply the best processor to be found on the market - and of course it comes with the Intel Logo......

Advantages: Reliable Disadvantages: Cost? ( see opinion )
...tag given to Intelprocessors is somewhat unjustified.
For example my PIII 600 in May 2000 - cost £240 running at 800mhz. An 800mhz PIII at the time was approx £500, enough to get a top of the range graphics card and change. Admittedly there are some "hidden" costs to the overclocked version e.g. a good quality mainboard, roomy case for good airflow, and a better heatsink, but I think that these are good practice in building any computer, the other minus is there's no guarantee that the processor you get will sucessfuly overclock.
I would however still recommend the PentiumIII, it's a good, fast and stable processor even when pushed towards it's limits....
