Manufacturer's product description

The Pentium II 450MHz Processor is designed for high-performance desktops, workstations, and servers. The processors in this family are the next logical step up after the Pentium Pro processors, and are to be used for demanding 16-bit and 32-bit applications running under Windows 95, Windows NT, and UNIX. They combine the processing power of the Pentium Pro processors with MMX Technology at higher clock speeds with 512KB ECC L2 cache. With Intel's 450MHz Pentium II processor you'll not only get a boost in processing speed but you'll also enjoy increased system bus bandwidth. This processor is designed for a 100MHz system bus, allowing you to take full advantage of Pentium II power by feeding more information to the processor. The 100MHz system bus combined with the Pentium II's own Dual Independent Bus architecture will give all of your applications more room to breathe than they've ever had. This processor is compatible with such IBM systems as Intellistation M Pro (6889), Netfinity 3000, Netfinity 5000, Netfinity 5000 Rack Mounted models, Netfinity 5500, Netfinity 5500 Rack Mounted models. IBM backs this product with a three-year customer carry-in exchange, customer carry-in repair warranty.

A top chip!
Review of Intel Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor by merkus77

Advantages: fast, new
Disadvantages: expensive

...I upgraded from an Intel Pentium II 450 mhz to the new Intel Pentium III 700 mhz mainly because of the upgrade offer at a low cost. I found that immediately there was a noticeable difference and just the way in which my computer carried out every day tasks like opening programs and the likes seemed to fly through as if my old chip was carrying 4 suitcases with it on it's chores! I find no problems at all with it and I would seriously recommend it to anyone after a high speed processor with lightning speed and good capabilities.... Read review

Intel, making the bucks, the sneaky way
Review of Intel Pentium 4 2 GHz processor by zero

Advantages: They are very powewrful processors
Disadvantages: Too expensive

...I'm not if AMD have done this but Intel definitely have. When they introduced the PIII 450 MHz for the first time, they did not mention to the public that it was only 10% faster than it's little brother the Pentium II 450MHz processor. When the gigahertz processor was introduced, it was tested by a popular computer magazine. I found the results to be surprising. In some areas of performance the Gigahertz processor was SLOWER than the 850 MHz processor. When ever a new processor is introduced it is always overpriced. This overpricing is not little it is ridicously high. A month or two after the release the prices drop massively. Then soon after a new processor is introduced, faster and more powerful. When this show will end who knows. These very powerful processors don't even operate to maximum performance because of the operating... Read review

A revolutionary step
Review of Intel Pentium III 1.13 GHz processor by Mcsm

Advantages: Its Intel
Disadvantages: Its Intel

...Unlike the jump from Pentium to Pentium II, which could justifiably be described as a revolutionary step, Intel's move from Pentium II to Pentium III is evolutionary. The new chip, which will initially be available in 450MHz and 500MHz clock speeds, uses the same 100MHz system bus, and Intel's preferred 440BX motherboard chipset, as its predecessor. The main differences are optimisations. In particular, the new chip has 70 extra instructions which have been designed to accelerate the performance of multimedia and Web-based operations such as audio/video streaming. In other words, the Pentium III is to the Pentium II what the Pentium MMX was to the vanilla Pentium. One highly controversial feature of the Pentium III processor is its machine-readable serial number, which can potentially be used to identify users to remote systems. Intel... Read review
