In a year dominated by the World Cup it's inevitable that soccer games by the handful will ... more
be released into a market keen to soak up as much footie as possible. Enter Konami'sISS 2, the follow-up to their massively successfulInternational Superstar Soccer. Being a follow-up doesn't guarantee success, however, andISS 2proves it's possible to take a winning formula and contaminate it with a sprinkling of annoyances that take the shine off a game that promised so much. The biggest problem stems right from the heart of the gameplay itself. Player control suffers from stop/start movements, meaning a change of direction can result in instant loss of possession as the opposition sweep the ball away while the player under your control hesitates for a second before performing the desired manoeuvre. Get caught by this a couple of times and you'll realise how exasperating it is and how it breaks up the smooth flow of play. Commentary too is weak and lacks the variety and smooth flow of titles such as2002 FIFA World Cup--turning it off is the only real way forward unless you're in a sadistic mood.If you can push these issues to one side, the rest ofISS2is a pretty good effort. Intro screens and menus are comprehensive and easy to use and a wealth of club, national and international sides are presented for your ball-booting pleasure. Action replays are comprehensive and, as has become the norm, can be viewed from hundreds of different angles. Graphically, the game's a treat for the eyes and manages to inject a little humanity into the players (unlike2002 FIFA World Cup's zombie Beckham, who's more likely to frighten the opposition to death than shimmy round them with a flick of the boot). All in all, though,ISS 2feels woolly and below par; the inadequacies of the control system make a real dent in the gameplay, which is very disappointing and takes some of the excitement away--it feels more like radio-controlled football then "being there". For best results stick toPro Evolution Socceror2002 FIFA World Cup. --Chris Russell

The game comes on one mini-DVD (not a cd as everyone keeps saying), and dependent on where you buy it, costs between £35 - £45 (play.com, amazon.com and gameswire.com all seem to be quite competitive). Mine actually came as a deal from Toys r us.

ISS or FIFA, the big debate between computer footy fans, however I've always upped my tent in the ISS camp.

So up starts the intro, quite average really and I think the music is the same chemical brothers track that was used on Wipeout (the game, not the crappy Paul Daniels TV show!.)
Then, up pop the options, all nicely presented, where there is: a cup competition, a league competition, VS option training option
and other "Options" (not too important)
Up to 4 players can take part, which is good for a laugh, although a major tournament is possible with many more players (tho not at the same time!)
Team & Stadium select are the next options. There are(only) 4 main stadia and (i think) about 40 world teams. Most of the players have real names as Konami have bought the licence from Fifa to do this, however some names, for whatever reasons are not what they should be. These, can be edited if it's that important.
The main thing about the game is the presentation, it's first class, from the intro, to the detail, the handshakes, the players egging each other on, the national anthems, it shows some of the excellent graphics capabilities of the console.
One bit to note is the replay's, the best being the shaking camera when the goal is scored, and the first person view when you score a header (tho i've only seen this once, or dreamt it!)
Then, a bit of a let down, Mark bleedin Lawrenson doing the commentating??? well he's not the main commentator, that being John (yawn) Champion. Why can't they get Stuart Hall or the bloke off channel 5 to do it, that'd be much better. The rest of the sounds are good, the stadium announcer is a nice touch and the chants aren't too bad either.
Controls are fairly simple, however at times, can be sluggish and you may end up running the ball into touch or being tackled too easily, a bit of a negative too, so you have to adjust your game to fit around this.
Lastability: well the league lasts blummin ages, so I will be persevering with this a bit longer. Plus playing vs friends is a scream.
I so wanted to give this a 5*, tho to be honest, it doesn't deserve that, if I were you, I'd wait until ISS 2003 comes out, which it will without doubt, or hang on to see if anyone else can better it (or FIFA) It doesn't compare with the N64 versions (on playability stakes anyway), however the graphics and sounds make for a good playing experience. Worth renting first I'd say,
Advantages: Solid football game Disadvantages: Slow, sometimes unexciting
...Now I’m going to rate International Superstar Soccer 2 (ISS for short), its main competitor. Sounds pointless, right? What’s the point of rating another, significantly older football game when I’ve already given Fifa full marks? Well, although they’re both football games, they have very different styles of play and basic gameplay. It’s like Liverpool and Real Madrid; both are football clubs but they are both very different.
Story
Since this was ... ...Football pitch playing for an International country is also great fun and adds more length to the game. In fact, you’ll probably find this option the most entertaining, even though there isn’t much to customize a player with. The Training and Multiplayer modes, mentioned earlier, are also well designed. You can also unlock special teams that include the best players from each continent, although I think Konami got it horribly wrong there.

Advantages: Fun 2 player footy action Disadvantages: Dodgy AI and controls
Firstly, let me begin by saying how much I hate football games that have 'Soccer' in the title. Thoroughly irritating. Soccer is a game played only in the US and features such things as: 'a net-shot opportunity'; 'the shot-zone'; 'sudden death match-up'; 'net-shake legends'. All these taken from American Commentary on the World Cup.
Anyway, apart from the nauseating title, here we have a sequel to the rather marvellous ISS64 (on the N64, of course) ... ...I was very excited when I saw ISS2 for sale and immediately purchased a copy based on the ruptation of it's predecessor. As a football game compared to the N64 version, it's better. But considering the Cube is more than twice as powerful, I expected to see more than just improved graphics.
There are three levels of game play:
Beginner, Real and Real Hard.
For the average player, these would be better labeled as:
Ridiculously Easy, Difficult and ...

...as you're favorite domestic team. International means just that. If you're English you can be England, German then Germany, an Arsenal supporter then France. Is a bit sloppy leaving out domestic teams. Most people will buy the game so the can be the team they watch each Saturday in the terraces. They'll be a bit disappointed.
Perhaps I'm being harsh. The game is capivating enough. It is frustrating but somehow you forgive it. Beating Germany/Argentina/Brazil ... ...is good and the graphics on the whole are fine and dandy. Its just got such obvious flaws. I have played other games on the mighty 'Cube and so much time and attention has gone into them that they just make this look a little half-baked. Rent it first (I did) and buy if you like it. Personally, I'm waiting for something a little better. This Is Football would be nice or a decent FIFA. I guess I'll just have to keep on playing Super Monkey Ball and ...

So what’s new about I.S.S 2? Nothing much has changed at all apart from proper player names. I.S.S 2 is generally an updated and much better version than its predecessors.

Advantages: Best Footie Game on Cube Disadvantages: Simplified controls
International super star soccer is the latest game from Konami. It is one of only three football titles on the gamecube at the moment, at it happens to be the best, no suprises there. It is yet another top class game. The presentation is on a hole very well done, with easy to understand menu's and easy access to the options. You can edit all the teams, leagues and players, you can even create your own players. The graphics are very clean and crisp, ... ...and have real names (a first for any ISS game) however the real names are limited to the more well known teams such as england and france.
The commentary is also excellent it has to be the best i have heard yet. As is the enviromental sound effects such as the crowds roars.
The only problems i have found with the game are that the players have large turning circles this can be annoying, but doesn't ruin the game. Also it can take a while to get ...
