Inventing Film Studies - Lee Grieveson (Editor) & Haidee Wasson (Editor)

Inventing Film Studies offers original and provocative insights into the institutional and intellectual foundations of cinema studies. While many scholars have linked the origins... more...of the discipline to late-1960s developments in the academy such as structuralist theory and student protest, this collection reveals the multiple material and institutional forces - both inside and outside of the university - that have long shaped the field. Beginning with the first investigations of cinema in the early twentieth century, this volume provides detailed examinations of the varied social, political, and intellectual milieus in which knowledge of cinema has been generated. The contributors demonstrate how multiple instantiations of film study have had a tremendous influence on the methodologies, curriculum, modes of publication, and professional organizations that now constitute the university-based discipline.Extending the historical insights into the contemporary moment, contributors also consider the future directions of film study in a changing technological and cultural environment."Inventing Film Studies" shows how the study of cinema has developed in relation to a constellation of institutions, technologies, practices, individuals, films, books, government agencies, pedagogies, and theories. Contributors illuminate the connections between early cinema and the social sciences, between film programs and nation-building efforts, and between universities and U.S. avant-garde filmmakers. They analyze the evolution of film studies in relation to the Museum of Modern Art, the American Film Council movement of the 1940s and 1950s, the British Film Institute, influential journals, cinephilia, and technological innovations past and present.Taken together, the essays in this collection reveal the rich history and contemporary vitality of film studies. It's contributors include: Mark Lynn Anderson; Mark Betz; Zoe Druick; Lee Grieveson; Stephen Groening; Haden Guest; Amelie Hastie; Lynne Joyrich; Laura Mulvey; Dana Polan; D.N. Rodowick; Philip Rosen; Alison Trope; Haidee Wasson; Patricia White; Sharon Willis; Peter Wollen; and, Michale Zyrd.

An End Has A Start - Editors

Advantages: Lyrically strong and musically very promising.
Disadvantages: It just isnt as great as their first album.Songs start firey but fizzle out too soon.

With their brilliant debut album The Back Room, it was clear that Editor's had the musical gravitas to craft another equelly compelling second album. But in my opinion, they didn't. For those of you that haven't heard Editor's then their sound is something like Interpol (vocally) and are definitely neo-post-punk musically. Guitars surge at the beginning of most songs aiming for something breathtakingly brilliant...trouble is that they never quite seem to get there. The songs some how begin to slump after the initial promise they offer. The lyrics are still thought provoking and moody, delivered perfectly by the direct and edgy vocals and the music is definitely better than most bands of a similar genre but for me it just doesn't quite cut the mustard. Especially when I am certain that this band could do so much better. But having ...

The Back Room - Editors

Advantages: 2 great tracks - Blood, and Munich
Disadvantages: Very disappointing tracks

This debut album by West Midlands band 'The Editors' was pretty disappointing, despite a number of critics claiming otherwise. MUNICH, and BLOOD are nice songs, and are a bit like 'Slow Hands' by Interpol. It's indie, but with a bit of an 80's 'New Order' / 'Joy Division' guitar sound coupled with 'Interpol' Both tracks seem to follow the same musical recipe, and this is something I'll get onto later. They are more or less copies of each other, with a catchy guitar in the background as the singer repeats the same lyrics over and over. With these 2 tracks it works well, and they are definitely worth a listen. But the spark runs out by the 4th track. There is nothing as good as MUNICH or BLOOD on the rest of the album. The other tracks are really quite boring and lack any catchy tune. Something was missing, and I think it was ...

A Level Film Studies - My Fortè

Advantages: Interesting, Practical, Branches your film taste
Disadvantages: Recommend taking the course in a well equipped college/school

As you all may have noticed from reading my profile I have recently just finished taking my A Level exams. Over the two year course i studied History, English, ICT, Drama and my fortè which is Film Studies. I would like to take this oppurtunity to explain to you all about this subject and how and why it had changed my career path over the past 2 years. Before i started my A Levels, i had many differnt aspirations, first of becoming a lawyer, then of being a chef. However, once i started my A Level course in Film Studies 2 years ago i have my heart set on working in the film industry. This is so true that i am awaiting to start my BA course at BCUC University to major in film production and minor in film studes with a sandwich year to work in calilfornia and visit the Cannes Film Festival. This all may sound ambitious to you all ...
