...as they simply couldn\'t cope.
After the server was installed we used the drives as simply a backup solution because we could just leave them running overnight and it didn\'t matter how many times they paused. This is where we hit the reliability issues. One of the drives flashed up with a message saying that the firmware needed to be updated, we followed the instructions on the screen and after several minutes we were told the update had been successful and the drive would reset. Off went the drive and it never came back on again we were just faced with a series of flashing lights and several emails to Iomega who finally sent out a replacement.
A few days later the second drive started to make very loud screeching noises. Upon a closer inspection we discovered that the fan had worn out due to the drive being on all day (even though our network room...

Advantages: Excellent Features Disadvantages: Fatally Flawed Software
...This unit is incredibly enticing. Most units, although 1TB, only allow 0,1 RAID. This means that in RAID 1 (mirror mode) you can only get 500 Gigs.
This Iomega unit allows you get 750 Gigs in RAID 5 since it has 4 drives. More cost effective storage space!
It also features:
* Linux based OS
* Flexible user and group based security,
* Above average performance with respect to RAID, responsiveness, and transfer speeds.
* Gigabit ethernet as well as 802.11G wireless
* 2 USB ports to attach additional storage
* 4 drive bays to upgrade and replace drives
* RAID 5 !. This is a prominent feature that sets it in a unique category among entry level NAS.
* A very well built enclosure. All metal, fairly thick at that, as well as very sturdy enclosure for the HD's that uses screws. Nothing plastic of flimsy here.
All very very good features...

...I bought an IoMega Ditto 250 drive quite a few years ago and it was the bit of computer equipment that I ever bought. It mangled tapes, didn't back up reliable and hardly ever managed to restore anything.
I had so many problems that I sent the drive back. IoMega replaced it and gave me free tapes to replace the ones that it damaged.
The replacement drive was as bad.
So was the second replacement drive.
And the third.
And the fourth.
In the end to give IoMega credit, they refunded my original price and gave me a fifth drive! I have not installed it.
Given my experience with this, and other tape drives I wouldn't recommend a QIC tape drive to anyone!...

I bought this hard drive for £101 and it has been a pleasure to use. It's a doddle to set up and install and the fast rate of transfer makes file sharing very efficient and easy.
