Advantages: You can write DVDs of all formats Disadvantages: Slow , bulky
i bought this drive last july (2005) for about £40 on sale at amazon.co.uk. i was in the market for an external dvd writer anyway and this seemed like a bargin.
Anyway, it wasn't. Both the Iomega website and box give the impression that this is a super fast dvd writer drive, but it isn't.
It can take up to 2 and a half hours to write a 700mb movie file to disc and longer if you want to fill the 4.7gb capacity of the average disc. The software it comes with is poor, full of errors and quite a disappointment.
Also it kept coming up with problems such as - no disc in drive after it scan it upon entry, cannot write DVD-R when it can and it kept confusing itself with a regular cd drive when it can to playing DVDs.
Overall, i would recommend using a different dvd writer (externally) from a more reliable company such as freecom ...
Advantages: ummmmm Disadvantages: Doesn't work very well, slow, intermitently recognises disks, poor back up service, need I go on?
I ordered my Freecom DVD Recorder LS USB2.0 after my CD/DVDdrive packed up on my 15 month old HP Desktop. I wanted it mainly to load CD ROM and burn DVD's from movies already converted to DVD format on my hard drive. Being that my PC had no disk drive I relied upon this external drive to load the bundled DVD burning software (Roxio 9). This took several days and many attempts. Then I tried burning my first DVD. After taking 3 hours to do a task that previously took about 30 minutes, this recorder produced a disc that no dvd player in my home recognised (and I have 4). I found the user interface very unfriendly and it simply didn't work. Needles to say, I'll be getting a refund! ...

CONCLUSIONS
Just to be precise, it does specify a 200ms DVD access time but believe me it's not only 0.2 seconds, not even 2 seconds actually. In conclusion, I don't really feel right to rate it anything lower than 3 stars because afterall it can do its job well, it's just that is too noisy and takes too much time to access a disc. That is a big flaw of an otherwise perfect and fast operating optical disk drive. ...
