There is promised perpetuation of compatibility with the old 100MB disks even in these higher capacity drives.
If you still don’t do back ups – start doing so now. These drives are cheap, highly efficient and look quite sleek. I recommended them highly.

Apart from slight slowness in large back up procedures (graphics files for instance) and the inability to use the printer and back up at the same time, the drive had given incident free service for over three years. My archive disks are already in 100 Mb format. They are easily transportable and are quite robust whether travelling in a slip case in a briefcase or jacket pocket.
I decided on a USB port route for the new drive. This was in part encouraged by Kodak (although not subsequently acted upon) where they promote direct linkages between digital camera, printer and Zip drive without the intermediary of a computer.
I bought two drives – one a 250MB model, and one a 100MB Ultraslim model. Both are much slimmer, lighter and sleeker than the rather oblong box appearance of the older one. They are made of semi-transparent blue plastic and the 250MB model comes with a small plinth that allows it to be stood on its side for easy storage. The disk goes into a slot at the front of the drive adjacent to which is a reject button that also doubles as a ‘working’ LED.
I was very pleasantly surprised how quick and easy the installation of the new drive proved to be. Software from the CD-ROM autoloads as soon as it is placed into the computer’s drive. Recognition was immediate on inserting the USB cable into the appropriate socket and drive letter assignment is also automatic. Power is also obtained from the host computer via the USB cable (great – one less power lead to clutter up the work surface!). A Zip Drive icon is loaded onto the Windows desktop. A right click from the mouse brings up a multi-faceted menu with such options as Explore, Copy, Paste and Properties. Some items are not available (Format, Copy Disk, Eject) unless a disk is physically in the drive.
The drives are compatible with both PC and Apple Mac. They will run with Windows 95 upwards. The office system is a hybrid of Windows XP Pro and Home; my home computer runs with Windows ME. Transfer speeds are quoted as up to 0.7 MB per second.
Back up and restore has proved to be simplicity itself. Straight forward file copies are simple drag and drop operations. More formal back up jobs can be scheduled. The drives are orders of magnitude faster than my previous parallel one.
The 250 MB drive costs £ 69 (£ 81.07 including VAT); the 100 MB costs £49 (£57.57 inc VAT). These packages do not include Zip disks which must be bought separately. This did not concern me unduly as I had a stock of spare materials. I bought by internet from dabsdirect (www.dabs.com). The drives were delivered from stock the next day.

...The 250MB Zip Drive from Iomega allows you to use 250MB disks and 100MB disks in its drive. This means that if you had brought an old Zip drive which only supported 100MB then you wouldn’t need to buy new disks. Both 100MB disks and 250MB disks work in this drive.
The drive itself is about the same size as Roald Dahl’s THE BFG softback book. It’s really no t very big and it’s lightweight. So you can carry it round in your, ... ...The 250MB Zip Drive from Iomega is a great machine. Small, lightweight sleek looking and copies data pretty damn fast.
Technically it does what it should and it does it well. Being able to access quickly disks of 250MB is no mean feat. This is a great machine. It is so fast you can even listen to music from disk.
It is small and lightweight but the power cables are really gonna pee you off.

Advantages: Bigger than floppy disks and "nice" design Disadvantages: Too small a capacity for the price, disks are too expensive & data transfer between the drive and your computer is very slow
...much faster.
In short - Iomega - thanks for a great invention to keep us going before we got CD Writers, but for the price I will stick with my CD-RW.

...who don't know what a Iomega Zip 250 USB Powered is, it is a portable storage device which accepts disks roughly double the thickness of a standard floppy disk. They store about 70 times the amount of data than a standard 1.44MB floppy disk does. The device is a small, lightweight and attractive looking device that can be easily placed near your computer without taking up much desk space. DISKS TO BE USED WITH THIS DEVICE
There are various disks that can be used in the device. Only ZIP compatable ones though that can vary in size from 25MB, 100MB to 250MB. You will find that 100MB and 250MB are used now. The typical price of a 250MB disk is around £10, although as ZIP drives have been around for a few years now this price is dropping all the time. I borrowed a friend's Zip 250 USB powered drive the other week, and have now just ordered one for myself.
Costs around £80 from most computer and electrical shops.
The plug and play feature is excellent: you don't need to restart the computer to use it, which is great for university; especially for large assignments, presentations and for downloading large files from the internet to take back to a home computer. the zip 250 definitely fills the ... ...CD-rewriter. Even if you have files that are larger than a 250 mb, they can be spanned across disks with the use of a file compression utility such as Winzip. The actual size and no-need for a separate power supply are further benefits in its favour. this makes the drive extrememly portable and easy to transport between computers. This drive is going to make my life much easier... i will no longer have to carry 20 floppy disks to university with ...
