INTRODUCTION
For those of you who don't know what a Iomega Zip 250 USB Powered is, it is a portable storage device which accepts disks roughly double the thickness of a standard floppy disk. They store about 70 times the amount of data than a standard 1.44MB floppy disk does. The device is a small, lightweight and attractive looking device that can be easily placed near your computer without taking up much desk space. The good thing about the device is that it is powered from your computer's USB port and requires no additional mains plug or batteries.
DISKS TO BE USED WITH THIS DEVICE
There are various disks that can be used in the device. Only ZIP compatable ones though that can vary in size from 25MB, 100MB to 250MB. You will find that 100MB and 250MB are used now. The typical price of a 250MB disk is around £10, although as ZIP drives have been around for a few years now this price is dropping all the time. If you are wondering what 250MB of data storage will hold then think of a CD (Compact Disk); a zip disk can of 250MB can hold roughly half of what a CD can hold. That is pretty impressive as ZIP disks can be easily placed in a pocket and are not so delicate as CDs, for example CDs can be scratched easily and dust settling on them makes them not work.
HOW A ZIP DRIVE WORKS (Briefly)
When you insert a Zip disk into the drive, the metal sheild slides to one side to expose a small opening along the leading edge of the plastic case. A metal hub in the cookie is engaged by a motor that spins at 3,000 rpm. This gives the drive a faster access time than a regular floppy turning at 360 rpm.
When the disk is fully inserted, the hole in its casing matches up with a hole in the housing that surrounds the read/write heads. This design minimizes the amount of scratch damage done to the cookie by dust and other contaminants.
The two read/write heads- one for each side of the cookie- extend into the casing. Unlike hard drive heads, which are never supposed to touch the surface of the disk, the Zip's heads do touch the cookie, but only very lightly compared to a floppy drive. The light touch permits the higher spin rate and produces less wear and tear on the cookie.
WHY A ZIP DISK WILL BENEFIT YOU COMPARED TO FLOPPY DISKS
The benefit of using a zip disk is that it will hold much more information than a floppy disk will. Also I would say that it is more reliable than a floppy disk, after a while floppy disks become impossible to use. Another good reason for using a ZIP disk is that data is read and written to much quicker than floppy disks, and will save space in carrying several floppy disks around.

Advantages: Bigger than floppy disks and "nice" design Disadvantages: Too small a capacity for the price, disks are too expensive & data transfer between the drive and your computer is very slow
