I first discovered Richard Laymon whilst visiting with my Nanna when I was about 14 years old. After becoming bored with the customary chit chat I began to browse over Nanna's bookcase when my eye was caught by green paperback with an illustration of a palm tree with a blood stained straight razor embedded in it's truck...naturally my curiosity was piqued.
The story at first appears to be your typical story about a group of people stranded on a isolated island written in the first person viewpoint of Rupert Conway a university student holidaying with his girlfriend Connie and her family. But appearances can be deceptive which very quickly becomes apparent when people begin to die starting with the men.
It becomes clear quite early on who is behind everything but the story doesn't let up with the surprises right up to the last sentence.
With deeply descriptive portraits of the characters(provided by Rupert who considers himself a writer and is crazy about all the female characters) and the scenery it's easy to transport yourself into the story and become deeply attached to everyone.
Although scared silly the first time I read Island it inspired an addiction to Laymon that still holds me enthralled to this day.
