Reading has always been one of the things I love doing, even when eating breakfast and reading the back of a pack of cornflakes - I've always loved reading. A good book is something I treasure - like a priceless ornament or family heirloom. I never want to let go. This book was certainley no exception.
Stephen King - I file that name under "Legends Of Writing". I remember buying DVD's with my dad once, and seeing "IT" and thinking 'God, that looks good!'. I persuaded him to buy it for us and my brother to watch (ever do DVD nights? No, neither do we! But I thought it would be a nice change). I liked the film. Not really scary, but I really liked the idea of a killer clown. Imagine my delight when I heard there was a book out which apparently was absolutley brilliant.
The main characters are The "Losers Club" :
Beverly Marsh - The only female of the group.. A fiesty, pretty 11 year old redhead whose father abuses her Bill Denbrough - A stuttering, intelligent, leader of the group who lost his younger brother Georgie to IT Richie Tozier - A four-eyed, loud-mouthed laugh who cannot be still or keep his mouth shut Mike Hanlon - The one most terrorized by neighbourhood bully Henry Bowers - for being black Eddie Kasbapk - Very uptight, small boy who's smothered by his mothers love and worry of him getting hurt Ben Hanscom - A rather rounded (in many ways!) lad, desperate to escape the torture of Henry Bowers and friends Stanley Uris - A clean, rather adult-like child, who does not believe in such things as monsters (until his encounter with IT, which he then cannot bring himself to admit he saw)
The plot was exceptional - Set in a fictional town called Derry, situated in Maine, shape-shifting monster referred to as IT is killing innocent children, until seven wily youngsters fight back; The Losers Club. After individual and group encounters with IT - who takes the form of their biggest fears (but mostly as a terrifying clown named Pennywise) - the youngsters decide to destroy the creature. Enter the Ritual Of Chüd, fighting IT down in the sewers. Thinking they have destroyed IT, the 11 and 12 year olds soon go their separate ways. 27 years later, the children are now adults, and are all called back by Mike (the only Loser who stayed in Derry) to kill IT once and for all as the last time they did, they were not successful enough.
1090 pages long, IT is a novel which can in some terms be quite confusing and complex - but it's such a masterpiece. There's a lot of sexual stuff and it doesn't hold back on the swearing which is great - it has many flashbacks and is just an amazing storyline. Stephen King at his very best.

Advantages: Ambitious, nostalgic, even touching Disadvantages: May be overwhelming for first-timers and short attention spans; the truly prudish may wish to steer clear of CHAPTER 22, part 12
