INTRODUCTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Wow. That's all I can say. I baught these JBL Creature II 2.1 PC Speakers under recommendation from a number of people on a forum via Amazon for £49.88 - a little more than I was expecting to pay. But with hindsight I now feel they were worth it. So, why did I buy them? Well, I needed a new set of speakers to do justice to my Xbox 360 and also my old Dell 2.0 speakers were going to die after a few coverings of water - not very healthy for an electrical device, I think you'll agree. Right, okay, moving on to the main content of the review.
SPEAKER SETUP ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It's really easy to setup this speaker system. All leads are colour-coordinated and the left and right speaker cables also fit into specific shaped holes so
you can't mix up which satellite goes in which hole at the back of the subwoofer. You connect the two satellite speakersto the back of the subwoofer, in their directed ports, connect the subwoofer to your computer via the normal 'Line Out' (green) sound port at the back and then put the power cable in the back. Though this can be fiddly sometimes because the holes are quite far in at the back. Though, you only have to do this once creally so it's really no fuss at all - it only means the connections are more secure. One thing I didn't agree with is where they've placed the power (I/O) button: at the back. This, in my opinion, should've been placed at the front to make it more accessible. But still, you'll only probably need to press it once because you turn it on once and then just turn it off at the mains socket. You can tell when the thing is powered because the two satellite speakers have a green LED on the bottom which glows when powered - which is very nice on a polished desk because it diffuses and then reflects. This adds a sort of 'alien' feel but is also functional because it indicates that everything is working.
THE SOUND ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, what can i say. Don't bother spending £200 on a 5.1 surround soundspeaker set. This is probably the closest you'll get to surround-sound with a 2.1 setup. When I first listened to my favourite Coca-Cola jingle, it sounded amazing and like it was coming from all around me. The satellite speakers are designed to send sound out in a particular direction to pointing them at you creates a wonderful sound. Added with the functionality of the subwoofer, allowing you to increase or decrease the bass and the treble of the output, the sound is as loud, as deep, as quiet or as dull as you like. I have the subwoofer on my desk and it does not violently shake the desk, put outputs those beets with a harness you can feel when the bass is turned up even slightly. Basically, the sound is great. From your Windows login sound to your grungiest .mp3 and your most musical Xbox 360 game, it does every sound justice and you'll be proud to own the speakers and proud to wake the neighbours up while pumping out your music collection.
AESTHETICS ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I baught these speakers in black, but I've also seen them in white and a lovely red colour but, for some reason, the red costs a lot more than the black or white. These speakers looks absolutely lovely and go really well with my 'midnight grey' Dell computer baseunit. The subwoofer is smaller than I expected and looks really great. People I've spoken to have likened the subwoofer to 'Darth Vader' and the satellites to mini 'Darth Vaders'. They're finished with a shine that you can see yourself in and their square based hill looks is very pleasing. You'll have guests asking you about them, wondering what they are. Great. The two 'Bass' and 'Treble' knobs on the subwoofer are easy to use and because they're silver, create a nice contrast between themselves and the black background. The satellite speakers have a sort of design, similar to the nuclear symbols, in silver which looks very nice. Also, on the right satellite are the touch sensitive volume controls, again silver, that look really nice.EVALUATION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, here are the most important points:
Great design and colour scheme
Functions kept simple
Functions easy to use and change
Quite a quick install
Great value for money for a 2.1 system
Fantastic sound from 2 small devices
Small subwoofer - doesn't clutter
Well, I hope you've learnt something. Go and buy these speaker now! If you don't like them you can always return them and also they have a 1 year warranty that comes with them. One thing that I would say though is don't drop the power brick on your foot because you won't have a foot left. The power brick is massive and bloody heavy. Though, once hidden under your desk, you won't ever notice it.
So, where can you get this? As I said I got mine from Amazon for £49.88 and this was the cheapest I found when I looked. Though, it may be cheaper in the highstreet stores. One thing to mention is that if you order from Amazon, you get free delivery if you're willing to wait 5 days. So, go and buy them now!
