The sound quality produced by these speakers is probably one of the best things about these speakers. First off, I'll start with a generalisation; it's awesome, now I'll go into detail…
First off, these speakers can really hit a high, the two tweeters can pump out a peak of 20,000Hz, which is great for any music that involves highs, this especially comes out during classical music, in which, these speakers excel…!
Though, one should not be confused into thinking that these speakers therefore cannot do anything in the bass region of things, because, oh yes, there is a 24 watt, 4 inch subwoofer, which is perfectly capable of shaking things off desks,
and rattling stationary, blowing paperwork and rippling drinks…! The bass is smooth, and subtle, although, with a short sharp twist of the bass knob, you can pump out enough waves to blow something away.
I'd just like to put a small snippet in here to alert people with pets. I discovered that playing music with a lot of bass, our dog did get rather scared, although I think she's overcome it now.
Overall, the sound quality is nothing short of exceptional, even when turned right up, there is very little discernable difference in quality.
Design ======
Another awesome reason for purchasing these speakers would be the design. There is nothing problematic with the design of the speakers, it is just pure beauty. I seriously feel that these are some of the most interesting and different speakers available, and they go strangely well with almost everything, believe it or not!
The first great design would have to be the small speakers, they are *insert colour of choice here* cast over a beautiful resin that is smooth to the touch and smooth to the eye. They are instantly eye-catching. Furthermore, the speaker 'protection' is beautiful polished chrome that is nothing short of iPod worthy!
The subwoofer is of the same combination, resin and chrome. An identical shape to the satellites, it matches perfectly, and furthermore I hasten to say that is complements any modern desk, (particularly a Mac desk).
The volume control is something interesting to talk about, it is formed from two small pieces of chrome on the right satellite. They are touch sensitive, and a very interesting alternative to a standard wheel. These controls are surprisingly easy to use, although, you have to get used to them, as they are most certainly significantly different to anything else on the market. There is only one design fault now that I think of it, and that is the power brick. My word is it large… It weighs more than the subwoofer, and when you pick up the box excitedly when you receive them, you think wow, that's heavy. Trust me; at least half of the weight is probably the transformer. Not to worry though, this is not an issue that should put you off buying these speakers, as it's not as if you want to publicly display such a thing anyway!
Ease of Installation ===============
The installation of these speakers is very easy. I have to start off by saying that this is most certainly an interesting aspect to these speakers, the wiring.
The wires all connect through the back of the subwoofer, as this is where the amplifier is also contained. The satellites wires are colour coded, and furthermore, are 'shape-coded' as I will call it. Meaning, you cannot plug the left satellite into the right's jack, as the triangle does not fit into the square hole. Very intuitive.
Once the wiring is complete, the last thing to do is simply to lay out the speakers how you want them to be on your desk, and voila, you are done.
So, I can safely say that this is again simple, although to be honest, a company has probably got to put more effort into this aspect of a product to make it difficult, so congratulations JBL, for being sensible!
Ease of Use / Features ==================
These speakers as I've already said have an interesting method of controlling the volume, very easy to use once you've got used to them. They are a simply plus and minus operation, and if you press both of them at the same time, then the speakers are muted. If you turn the speakers are completely switched off, when they come back on, they are at the previous volume, so you do not get any horrific shocks by ridiculously loud music!
There are no particularly interesting or extreme features of the speakers, although I must say, they just have the Wow! Factor, the satellites in particular, they have a green LED powering down onto your desk, and in the dark really look like they could be floating!
Value for Money =============
Here is where the speakers really shine. 49.95. You can really go wrong with speakers that cost that little, that's why I was apprehensive at first, but my word, is it good value for money. I've heard £100+ speakers sound a lot worse than these, so these are probably some of the best value speakers on the market to date.
