JJB Sports....a shop I thought I could trust for a bargain and straightforward, hassle free service....now I'm disillusioned.
I've shopped at JJB sports a number of times in the past. I've bought a number of squash racquets from them at what seemed good prices, picked up various articles of clothing, and found some bargain shoes.
Their stores are typically out-of-town 'bargain barns' and though I have visited city centre branches in Glasgow, this report primarily relates to the out of town store in Slough. As you'd expect from a bargain barn, they have a reasonably wide range of brands available from the main players in the market - Nike, Addidas, Reebok, Le Coq Sportif etc. etc.
For clothing, their prices are usually competitive with the other high street chains, though you can frequently find bargains in their regular sales or discount offers. Their clothing stock probably makes up around 70% of their stock on the grounds of floorspace alone, and as a result they typically have a good selection.
In other areas of the store, they have a reasonable footwear selection and a pretty limited sports equipment section. In the Slough store, they have an additional, mezzanine floor in the rear quarter of the store which features a range of cycles and golf clubs.
The staff, however, in their stores are typically poorly trained and pretty unhelpful. I have previously found this when seeking footwear advice, and was disappointed again today when buying a badminton racquet. This poor experience has made me question returning to the store, and so I will recount it here for the benefit of others to make their own choices:
I had spent a small amount of time reviewing racquet prices on the internet today prior to deciding to visit a store to decide 'in person'. During my pricing exercise, I discovered that www.jjbsports.co.uk acually advertises tartan products and that www.jjb.co.uk is the site to use for JJB Sports...though you cannot buy online and the online catalogues are pretty sparse (Gym equipment, Basketball equipment or Table tennis gear *only*).
Having travelled a couple of junctions along the M4, I found the selection of around 12 badminton racquets fairly easily and was able to select one that I thoughth would suit me. I checked with a nearby assistant who was stacking shelves, and confirmed that a cover would be provided for the racquet at the cash desk.
The lady at the desk rang through my purchases and had taken my money before shouting over my shoulder to a colleague, requesting a cover. Her colleague asked if the racquet was "Isometric" (a feature of the model I chose), to which the lady on the till responded: "There isn't a number on it" "Is it Isometric? On the shaft ?" <I indicate the text on the shaft> "There isn't a number on it" Me, shouting: "Yes, it's isometric"
Now, the relevance of being isometric appears to be primarily that the racquet has a 'non-standard' shape to the head - as such as standard cover wouldn't suit.
Shortly after the exchange, the assistant turned up with a black cover bearing the manufacturers name - it didn't fit however and obviously wasn't intended for the racquet in question. She returned to find another, only to turn up with a white cover the same shape, announcing that this was the only other one. This didn't fit either, but served to prove that the basic cover could be stretched enough to make do.
So - for their range of 12 racquets, at least 4 of which were from the manufacturer I chose, they were unable to find the correct matching head cover. I was close to asking for my money back, but being short of time chose to leave in disgust instead.

Bargain Barn I thing thats Sport & Soccer but they actually have a better range your review was pretty accurate .Oh and for the record not all staff are badly trained it's just the one's who are tend to leave or get promoted to surely supervisors and assistant managers who generally hate their job and customers make it very hard to smile with questions like "Do you sell wellies?" and when you say no they say "But I thought this was s sports shop!" I've also been asked for travel pillows, baby carriers and pyjamas btw I worked there for 5 years so I know what I'm talking about.
