***First of all, my apology to those that may have read this review already under JD Sports. I am waiting for that review to be deleted due to my mistake, it should have been for this store***
SITUATION
I am writing this review on the strength of a visit to JJB Sports at The Fort in Birmingham on Froday the 16th December 2005.
My wife and i dropped into JJB Sports as we were passing to look for some coats for our boys and some bits for the wife as well.
THE STORE
The store itself was spacious, well lit and well laid out, so even a man of my girth could walk around comfortably without being trapped between racks. The racks themsleves were well marked up by brand and price range (e.g. Under £10 rack etc..).
Everything seemed very clean and dust free, which is not easy in these big stores to keep under control.
We went in at around 12:25pm and there were only 5-6 other customers in the store, outnumbered by staff as far as i could see.
PRODUCTS
JJB Sports sells a good range of sports and leisure wear as well as sports and leisure equipment.
There are all of the well known brands available at premium brand prices (although there were a lot on sale at the time) as well as a fair amount of unknown brands at lower prices. Overall i think that there would be generally be something for anyone that was looking for sports/leasure wear.
They also carry a great range of sports equipment, espacially football equipment including a great assortment of balls, socks, shinpads etc.
My wife plumbed for a couple of pair of Adidas Ess woven bottoms which were priced down at £7.99 from £14.99 and a top to match which had been marked down to £3.49 from £7.99.
We were unable to find any suitable coats for our boys in the price range we wanted to pay, but this was not down to a lack of choice i would like to add, just personal taste.
SERVICE & STAFF
I know that i was hardly making a bank breaking purchase, but i expect a good level of service whether buying a pack of gum or a £1200 TV, but this is where it all fell apart. On arriving at the counter area (clearly laid out for queing and packed with impulse buys) there were two customers being served by two staff at the counter in front of me and another gentleman joined the queue behind me. There were another two staff milling close to the counter area and two more arranging clothes on the racks 10-15ft from the counter area.
As one of the customers that was being served moved away from the counter the staff member serving him looked my way and i approached the counter. As i approched though, the staff member just turned and walked away to the other end of the counter and just stood there?? Just before i could ask if he was going to serve me, the phone rang and he decided to answer that instead. So i stood, expecting one of the other rwo milling staff to move in and serve me, how silly was i.
Eventually the second person that was already being served finished and left the counter, at which point the staff member (staff no.005 according to the reciept, although i will not mention his name) that was serving him, took my items and rang them through the till. By this time the queue behind me had grown to three people, yet not one of the (now four) members of staff milling behind the counter bothered to serve them. What was more annoying was the fact that the guy that had left me and then answered the phone seemed to be either a manager or team leader as he was giving instructions to the staff that were actually doing something in the store.
In a very small defence, the gent that served me was fairly quick and efficient bagging my items well, although he served me from one booth (for want of a better word), but i had to move to another to make my payment by debit card (on a secure pin pad by the way).
CONCLUSION
Overall, i must say that this visit left me very cold and annoyed towards the store as a whole. I am just very glad that i visited the store at a quiet time as i think that it would have been very unpleasent experience at a busy time.
This was my first visit to one of these store and i must admit that unless i had a specific reason to go there in future, i would think twice before going again. I am only marking them as high as average due to the selection and prices of the goods.
For those who will ask why i did not complain on site about these problems, i have been banned by my wife from doing so due to a skermish that ensued due to a similar problem at a well known supermarket. I am writing an e-mail complaint to JJB this week and will edit this review with any response.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
low prices shouldnt also mean low quality service, its not like that in the poundshop so a place as big as JJB should know better. i find their staff aren't well informed on products anyway.

I agree good service and good manners cost nothing and should be paramount - lyn x

Had similar problems - so annoying, you want to make a stand, slam down the goods and stomp of in a huff, but on the other hand you want to buy them due to the low prices so you wait around for them to finally serve you......!
