Reason for buying -------------------------
I have to admit, I have no reason at all to buy this product. There is alot of marketing surrounding the JML grab mat though, so hats off to the marketing men for the high profile ad campaign. Why would I use one? However my Dad bought one for himself so got me one too. I did try to say I would never need it but don't really want to offend him. (look a gift horse in the mouth an' all that).
Get your coat - grab your keys ----------------------------------------
I tried it on the kitchen unit just to see if it could hold a coin on the vertical, and (piccy included) it actually managed it. There was a good amount of adhesion when trying to peel the mat off the door again, but not sure how it would cope with a car dashboard. Most car dashboards I have seen are of that plastic rippled effect type, not as flat and smooth as the cabinet door.
Yeuch! ! ----------
I put it in the car and immediately disliked the colour. I'm not sure if you can get silver/grey ones (according to the website advert you can). But being blue and sitting on a grey dash it sticks out like a sore thumb. It didnt stick too well to the dashboard anyway. So a little more time to get in place so it doesnt slide is needed.
Then the items to put on. What items? The advert has mobilephones, coins and keys as examples of what to put on it. Frankly I wouldnt trust the concave curve on my dash to allow it to hold a phone with very much strength. I am not prepared to test a phone for it to go sliding off the dash and break. Keys perhaps? Im not leaving keys, money or phone on the dashboard. Why would I? There's the added chance that you will either stop the car and someone will reach in through the open window and run off with them. Or you will forget them, even if just to fill up with fuel. Now your possesions are in full view and away they go..
It's got grubby very quickly too, and has already picked up dust and fingerprints which I have no idea how to get off, save from washing it. (not sure if it wil take a wash)
Its not that the product doesnt work, I can't think of anything I'd use it for. I just don't put anything on my dashboard, and this wouldn't make me. It looks tacky (hur hur sorry). so I've taken it off and apologised to my Dad.

Thanks for your useful analysis. I was considering one to hold my satnav on the curved and ripply dash. Another solution methinks!!

Some good points there. Folk buy gadgets jst because it's something new and they often dont think abot things like thieves. Nanna loves all these JML things her house is full of them so I will tell her not to get anyone one of these for a car! Might be good for other things though.
